He couldn’t go any further. He headed under a bridge that crossed a deep ravine. Climbing over the fence, he cut himself on the barbed wire, but being under the bridge out of the snow felt great. He crawled further under the bridge. There was no snow, so he removed his backpack and sat down. With his flashlight, he looked around and found a shallow fire pit, small sticks, and a bag of charcoal. After scooping up some dead leaves, he started a small fire. By the light of the fire, he bandaged his wrist and unpacked his sleeping bag. The snow outside of the bridge was piling up fast. He slithered into the sleeping bag and fell asleep.&nbsp;Two loud bangs woke him up. A voice shouted, “You’ve been warned, bitch” and two more shots rang out. A very bass voice said, “Toss her over the fence. The snow will cover her up till spring. Thank God we’ve got a jeep, or we’d never get back to town.Sam waited for a while and crawled out from under the bridge. He only saw heavy snow falling, but pink snow near the fence covered a woman’s body.He heard a cough from under the snow, so he reached down and pulled the body under the bridge. She was small and bleeding from her head and belly. He grabbed her under her arms and moved her near the fire. Now digging in his backpack for the first aid kit and some gauze, he pulled out a blanket, covering her legs and midriff.&nbsp;Sam examined the wound on her head. He saw the bullet had skipped across her skull, creating a channel with blood oozing. He filled the channel with gauze and taped it shut. Rolling her on her side, he saw the other bullet had gone right through her, so he patched both sides.With the temperature dropping, he put her in the sleeping bag and got in next to her. Lying next to her, he realized she was tiny and very short. She was breathing, but it was very shallow breaths. He fell asleep, fearing she would die.&nbsp;
