The weight of Vorrak's dark energy pressed down on Superman like an invisible mountain. His muscles strained, his vision blurred, and for the first time in years, he felt something close to helplessness. Omni-Man, the brutal warrior who had torn through entire civilizations, was on his knees beside him.That was not a good sign.Superman ground his teeth and strained against the power. His Kryptonian cells seared as they battled the unnatural force flooding his body. He had survived worse; he had battled gods, demons, and entities that broke worlds. He would not bow.With a bellow, he pushed himself up, red fire blazing in his eyes. Heat vision flared, a blaze of energy through the suffocating dark. The beam hit Vorrak's uplifted gauntlet, but rather than burning through, the energy was soaked into the alien metal like a sponge to water. Vorrak's lips curled upward in a sneer."Good," mused the Zonnarian warlord. "You battle.Omni-Man, still hobbled to one knee, growled a guttural snarl. His pride would not permit this indignity. With sheer willpower, he strained against the gravity well holding him, his body shaking with effort. The air cracked as his power burst.Then, in a burst of motion, Omni-Man launched himself forward.His fist struck Vorrak's chest plate, causing shockwaves to ripple across the battlefield. But the Zonnarian did not even blink.Before Omni-Man had a chance to respond, Vorrak clamped his hands around the Kryptonian's throat and held him aloft. "Viltrumite hubris," he thought, constricting his grip. "Your people fell for a reason."Superman launched himself forward with everything he had, his fist ablaze with naked solar power. This time, when he struck Vorrak's flank, the warlord actually stumbled.It wasn't much, but it was something.Vorrak's attention shifted to Superman, his amusement giving way to interest. He let Omni-Man fall to the ground. The Viltrumite coughed, his chest rising and falling. He wasn't accustomed to being defeated."I see now why the Dominion is interested in you, Kryptonian," Vorrak said, extending his gauntleted hand. "You have untapped potential. Perhaps in another time, you could have stood among us."Superman's eyes narrowed. "Not interested.Vorrak smiled. "Too bad." He lifted a hand, and his troops charged, their guns vibrating with dark power.Omni-Man stood, blood trickling from his mouth. He licked it away and faced Superman. "We must kill him."Superman hesitated. He did not kill. But some instinct warned him that Vorrak was an enemy who would not listen to reason.Survival first for the time being.The war broke out in full fury once more. Zonnarian troops came down in a storm of steel, slashing through the heavens with lethal intent. Omni-Man and Superman engaged back-to-back, their knuckles ripping through the ranks with crushing force.Superman deflected a blade in mid-swing, crushing it with a squeeze before freezing its wielder with a blast of freeze breath. Omni-Man took two warriors by the skulls and slammed them together with bone-shattering force.But for each soldier they killed, there were more to replace them.Above them, Vorrak smiled with satisfaction."This is only the beginning."A low, thunderous noise filled the air. The ship hovering over them ripped open, and something enormous inside it was revealed. A weapon? A war creature? Superman's stomach churned as he saw what it was.An entire city.Drifting in the ship's interior, suspended by Zonnarian science, was a city unlike any Superman had ever imagined. Spires of obsidian metal that reached high into the air, pulsing veins of glowing red energy, and great chains holding it within the warship's heart. It was a world overthrown, torn from its foundation, and held as a prize.And it was coming to Earth.Superman's breath caught. "No…"Vorrak spread his arms wide. "Welcome to the new era, Kryptonian. Your world awaits."Superman's heart raced. He and Omni-Man were strong, but this… this was something different.This was war.Superman zoomed through the air, his body crashing into the upper levels of the atmosphere before he managed to catch himself. The impact of Omni-Man's punch zipped through his muscles, a sensation unfamiliar to the Man of Steel. He had blood on his tongue.Clark's vision stabilized just in time to watch Omni-Man charging towards him like a comet, fists up, his red Viltrumite cape billowing behind him.He's powerful. As powerful as me, perhaps more so.But strength alone did not decide the winner of a battle.With a blast of heat vision, Superman blasted twin beams of blazing red energy. Omni-Man spun midair, dodging with impossible accuracy. He covered the distance in a heartbeat, slamming an uppercut into Superman's ribs. The impact was like a thunderclap, and Superman stumbled backward, agony flashing through his body.Omni-Man didn't relent. He pounded his fists against Superman's chest, each punch encompassing the power to knock mountains flat. The final blow knocked Clark hurtling back toward Earth, his body ripping through the air like a meteor.Get up. Fight back.Superman clenched his teeth, slowing his fall. He'd been hit before. He'd fought Doomsday, Darkseid, and beings beyond imagination. Omni-Man wasn't unbeatable.And Superman wasn't going down today.Omni-Man plummeted downward, ready to strike once more. But this time, Clark was prepared.With a deafening boom, Superman caught Omni-Man's fist in mid-swing. The shockwave shattered the clouds. Surprise for the first time danced in Omni-Man's eyes.Superman's hold hardened. "Enough."And then he counterattacked.His blow knocked Omni-Man flying through the sky, directly into a mountain range. The summit burst into dust and rubble when it hit. Before he could catch his breath, Superman was already there, grabbing him by the collar."I don't know what your strategy is, but I won't let you harm anyone."Omni-Man's lip curled. "You really think you can stop me?"Superman didn't respond. He punched him into the air with all his might and sent him soaring into the stratosphere.But before Clark could give chase.BOOM!A massive explosion rocked the distance. Superman spun hard toward Metropolis.His heart tightened.A massive battleship, dark and serrated as a blade, ripped through the clouds, its engines burning a sickly green light. Alien runes traced along its hull.Out of its belly, huge figures fell towards the city like shooting stars.Superman's face grew dark. This is not only about Omni-Man.A voice crackled in his comms in his ear: Lois Lane."Clark! Are you seeing this?" She sounded urgent but calm. Always calm."I see it.""Who are they? "Superman's eyes narrowed. "I don't know. But I'm about to find out."Lois's voice softened just a fraction. "Be careful."He took off toward the city, his cape trailing in the wind.The Zonnarian ThreatAs Superman approached, the figures landing in Metropolis became clearer. Towering warriors, their armor an eerie obsidian hue, stood amidst the chaos. Their eyes burned with an unnatural glow.The leader emerged a giant of a man with ghostly, silver-hued skin and a pointed crown-like headpiece. His voice boomed throughout the city."I am Xyron of the Zonnarian Dominion. This planet is now our domain."Superman touched down several feet away from the warlord, standing rigid. "Not today."Xyron's eyes surveyed him, measuring. "We demand Omni-Man. Hand him over to us, and we will leave this world intact."Superman's stomach churned. What do they need him for?He maintained his calm tone. "That's not going to happen."Xyron's face didn't change, but his soldiers shifted into position, their weapons glowing. "Then you die with him."And with that, the Zonnarians charged.Superman prepared himself just as Omni-Man blazed from the sky, slamming into Xyron in a crushing impact.The ground shook beneath them.Omni-Man, his face darkened with anger, turned to Superman."I don't require your assistance," he snarled.Superman tightened his fists. "Then keep your distance."The fight for Earth was underway.The Metropolis streets shook as the initial shockwave of Omni-Man and Xyron's battle coursed through the city. Windows imploded. Alarms shrieked. Citizens fled in every direction, their cries drowned by the cacophonous fight between two giants.Superman hardly had time to process the devastation before a Zonnarian fighter charged forward, wielding a huge energy sword aimed directly at his throat.Clark dodged to the side, catching the alien's wrist in mid-swing. He clenched his hand tighter, feeling the unnatural bulk of the Zonnarian's body, a strength equal to Kryptonian muscle.They're strong. Too strong.With a sudden gesture, Superman plunged his fist into the warrior's chest. The force sent the soldier hurtling back, striking a bus hard enough to halve the vehicle like an open shell. But the Zonnarian hardly responded; he sprang back up again, eyes shimmering like melting silver.Superman's heart racing. This wasn't just any ordinary alien attack.The Zonnarians weren't simply powerful.They could take it.Along the battlefield, Omni-Man was in ferocious combat with Xyron. Every hit sent shockwaves through the air, buildings creaking under the pressure. Omni-Man was quicker, his fists whirling red and white in a blur as he pounded into the warlord's armor.Xyron barely winced."You were an idiot to run from us, Nolan Grayson." Xyron's deep voice shook the city, overlaid with an unnatural echo. "You know what deserters get."Omni-Man snarled. He pinned Xyron to the ground, holding him by the throat, slamming him into the pavement hard enough to shatter the earth beneath them."I'm not anyone's soldier." His venom. "Not anymore."Xyron's lips curled into a parody of a smile."Then why are you still running?"Before Omni-Man could act, Xyron's body changed. His form rippled one moment solid, the next like living darkness. Then he reemerged behind Nolan, his blade already in motion.The edge of the energy sword cut clean across Omni-Man's chest. A gash opened deep, red, spilling into the air.Superman heard the hard, pained breath that Nolan drew in.He's injured.Superman didn't wait. He blurred forward at top speed, catching Xyron's second strike. He grasped the warlord's arm, halting the blade an inch from Omni-Man's bare throat.Xyron's smoldering silver eyes locked with Clark's, and in that instant, something was exchanged between them.Recognition."…Kryptonian."Superman's hold on the warlord's arm tightened. "I don't know who you are, but I do know this: you're not taking Earth."Xyron laughed a deep, thundering sound. "Your world was never my target." His eyes flashed toward Omni-Man, his smile growing wider. "He is."Superman's gut churned.This wasn't conquest alone.The Zonnarians desired Omni-Man for a purpose.Before he could demand an explanation, another blast shook the city. More Zonnarian vessels plummeted from the air, unleashing a legion of soldiers upon Metropolis.Superman regarded Omni-Man, his jaw clenched. "I don't trust you."Omni-Man cleaned the blood from his injury, his eyes blazing with anger. "I don't require your trust."Superman returned to the battlefield, gasping sharply. Then we'd best not get in one another's way.And so the two most powerful men on the planet charged into battle.
