The land of Eryndale spread out in an eternal gloaming, the sky blushing purple and gold. The old woods murmured secrets of a bygone era, and deep within their shadows an unfelt power slept. In the tiny, fog-shrouded village of Velmora, Lyra, a hot-headed herbalist with a talent for reading danger, had tried all her life to resist the call of the forest's shadows. But on that morning, as she strolled the edges looking for unusual herbs, the air thickened and the wind hummed a refrain of sadness. It was then that she saw him, Kieran, a dark, weathered stranger in armor, his silver hair gleaming in the faint light. He staggered out from the trees, bleeding from a torn wound across his ribs. His piercing gray eyes met Lyra's, and although she'd never laid eyes on him before, his glance was hauntingly familiar. "Back away!" Lyra cautioned, her hand on the blade of her small dagger. Kieran dropped to a knee, his words faint but firm. "You. You're the Keeper. I located you." Before Lyra could ask him anything, the mist coiled, pawslike, around the trees. The earth shook, and out of the darkness strode monsters of the nightmare, Duskwraiths, their empty eyes blazing with evil. Kieran shoved himself upright, producing a blade that radiated an unearthly blue light. "Run, Lyra! I'll slow them down!" Lyra didn't run. Something inside her awakened a voice, gentle yet authoritative, which whispered in her mind. Her hands radiated a faint light, and the air around her rippled with power she had never realized. The Duskwraiths hesitated, and Kieran stared at her, wide-eyed. "It's true. You are the Keeper. As the creatures retreated into the mist, Lyra's glow faded, leaving her trembling. Kieran approached cautiously, his expression a mix of reverence and regret. "You have the power to save this world, Lyra," he told her. "But it will cost you. The darkness is aware of you now, and it will do everything in its power to take you." Lyra's heart drummed. She had lived her life attempting to go unnoticed, to escape the perils spoken of in myths. Yet now, a woodsman stranger and a power she did not comprehend had pulled her into a story much older than she could dream. And deep in the veil of the fog, a dark figure waited, its whisper a cold echo. "The Keeper is awake. Let the hunt commence.". Lyra sat in the small, dark room above her herb shop, her thoughts spinning. The magic in the air seemed thick and heavy, the kind she'd only read of in the old books her grandmother kept sequestered. She looked at the man before her, Kieran, his silver hair now in a loose ponytail, his wound well wrapped. "You told me I was the Keeper," Lyra whispered, her voice barely audible. "What does that even mean? And why me?" Kieran's eyes relaxed as he reclined against the wooden chair. "You are the chosen one, Lyra. The Keeper's power is inherited generation after generation, waiting for the time that it will be needed most. It is the only force that can halt the incoming darkness. But I fear the road ahead will be tougher than you envision." Lyra gazed out of the window, her mind reeling. "I don't get it. All I've ever wanted is a peaceful life. What if I'm not strong enough for that?"&nbsp; "You're stronger than you realize," Kieran said softly. "But there are things you need to learn before the darkness catches up with you. You're not alone for this." The muffled sound of footsteps cut into their conversation. Lyra's heart began to pound. The village was never so raucous at night. Kieran jumped up, his hand resting on the pommel of his sword, eyes scanning toward the door. Arlen, a blacksmith in the village and childhood friend, burst into the room before Lyra could say a word. His face was white, eyes huge with terror. "They're here," Arlen panted, having trouble breathing. "The Duskwraiths, they're close. I saw them in the forest." Lyra's blood turned icy. She had seen them, too, in her visions. The ones from her nightmares, their empty eyes burning with evil. "We don't have much time," Kieran replied, his tone stern. "You have to come with me, Lyra. The stone in the forest will teach you about your power. But we need to hurry. Lyra glanced between Kieran and Arlen. Her mind whirled. She had no choice. Her village's safety and the realm's hung in the balance. No hesitation, she snatched up her cloak and accompanied Kieran out into the darkening Velmoran streets. The wind had picked up and it carried with it the distant, unnatural cries of something that listened. As they approached the forest's edge, the fog appeared to thicken, the trees a silent watchfulness. Kieran took her to a hidden glade, where a great stone altar rose, ancient runes pulsing softly in moonlight.&nbsp; "This is the Heartstone," Kieran said. "Here the Keeper's power is anchored. Touch it, and you will know what is to come." Lyra hesitated, her heart racing in her chest. But when her hand came into contact with the surface of the stone, a burst of energy ran through her, pumping her veins with heat and light. Images flashed before her eyes, images of a long-lost war, of a world that was once bathed in light now consumed by shadows. And then she saw it: a figure shrouded in shadow, eyes glowing like coals the real enemy. With a gasp, Lyra withdrew her hand, her breathing shallow. "Who. was that?" Kieran's face grew hard. "That was Malgorath, the one who used to reign over the darkness. And now, he awakens." A moment later, a far-off howl broke the night, followed by the unmistakable scuffling of creatures among the trees. "They're here," Kieran stated, his sword appearing in his hand. "Lyra, fight now." Lyra's eyes met the stare of the Duskwraiths as they crawled out of the fog, their empty eyes burning brighter than ever. The weight of her fate was upon her shoulders. The Keeper was no longer a legend it was her reality. And the battle for Eryndale had commenced. Lyra was motionless, her breath ragged, her thoughts racing. She could still see the image of Malgorath's blazing eyes in her head as the distant wails of the Duskwraiths grew louder and sent a shiver down her spine. "We need to go now," Kieran urged, his voice firm but controlled. He yanked her away from the Heartstone. "The energy you've tapped into is just the tip of the iceberg. You need to be prepared." Lyra nodded, but her heart was heavy. She had pressed her fingers against the stone, felt the rush of magic, and yet she still didn't comprehend it all. She looked back over her shoulder one final time at the altar before Kieran drew her further into the misty wood. The trees clustered about them like the walls of an old fortress, their gnarled branches extending like bony fingers. "Tell me more about Malgorath," she whispered, trying to suppress the fear gnawing at her insides. Kieran's expression narrowed. "He was a master of the dark forces, a sorcerer who was so great that even the gods feared him. He brought Eryndale to the brink of destruction centuries ago, but he was imprisoned by the Keepers. Now that the Heartstone is awakened, his prison is weakening." "And I'm supposed to stop him?" Lyra's voice shook. "How? You are the Keeper," Kieran said again. "You possess the power that can kill him, but first, you need to learn how to use it. It won't be easy, and it won't be sudden. That is why we need to stay one step ahead of him." They pushed quietly through the heavy undergrowth, each creak of the leaves and snap of wood sounding like an enemy closing in. Lyra's heart hammered in her chest, every instinct urging her to know that they were not alone. "Over there," Kieran said softly, grabbing her around a large tree trunk and grabbing for the hilt of his sword. "They're close." Lyra looked where he did, seeing shadows darting between the trees. The Duskwraiths were closing in, their empty eyes glowing in the blackness. Their bodies were shrouded in mist, hardly there at all, like ghostly apparitions of nightmares made flesh. Kieran pulled out his sword, his actions smooth and quick, the sword glinting in the night. Lyra's hand automatically found the dagger on her hip, but she held back. She didn't know how to fight, much less fight beings that had been created from darkness. Kieran faced her. "Have faith, Lyra. The Heartstone has granted you strength to defend yourself. You just have to have faith in it." Before Lyra could say anything, the first of the Duskwraiths attacked them, its empty eyes fixed on her. Something awakened within her in that instant, something ancient, something powerful. Her hand flashed out, and even before she was consciously aware of what she was doing, a blast of light leapt from her fingers, repelling the creature back. She gasped, shocked by the flash of energy. The Duskwraiths stepped back, hissing and howling as the pulsing light went on from her. The power was like a living thing, humming just below her skin, but wild, uncowed, like a storm kept barely in hand. Kieran grinned, a spark of pride in his eyes. "That's it. You're picking it up quicker than I anticipated."Lyra's heart pounded, the magic coursing through her still humming. But there was no time to absorb it. The Duskwraiths reformed, their bodies flowing like smoke. They weren't finished. "Keep your wits about you, Lyra," Kieran cautioned, moving into the fight. "The fight's only just started." As Lyra grounded herself, poised to meet the creatures face-to-face, she understood one thing: she was not only the guardian of a lost power; she was the last hope of her world. And it was only the start.
