When she woke up, there were 17 voicemails from a number she didn't recognize.
Arleen Decker just woke up to a high pitched ringing in her ears and deafened vibrations around her. This strange number kept calling. She tried to speak but can barely hear herself. "Ow " she flexes her jaw and puts a hand to her head where blood was drying. "What in the hell happened?"
"Last thing I remember I was at the diner. I was taking the trash out. Then - nothing, I just go blank." "Did someone hit me on the head and drag me out here just to leave me here? What in the fuck for?" She was livid and regaining her strength or so it seemed most likely due to an adrenaline shock. She isn't having too much difficulty navigating the woods. "I know that moss growing on rocks and trees is supposed to be the direction where town/or civilization is supposed to be.
That was really all she had to go off of being deep in the woods with very little idea of who to call or what to say she continued forward hoping to find a highest sometime soon.
Eventually she came up on a hwy and started dialing her roommates number.
"Clara, somethings happened. I need you to come and get me please drive away from town on highway 56 and keep going until you see me "
"Okay, I'm on my way. What's going on? You didn't come home last night?"
"I'll tell you all I know when I see you. It's confusing and not making much sense."
Ten minutes pass by and Arleen sees headlights of in the distance, she gets to the shoulder of the highway and it was Claras black bmw. Clara pulled up to the shoulder so Arleen can get in the car.
"What's going on girl, get in get in. Why are you all the way out here and is that blood on your face?" "My God Arleen what happened to you?"
"I don't know, I woke up in the woods about an hours ago with this searing migraine and no idea of what happened after work last night."
"We have to go to the police." Clara said.
"No, I just want to go home and shower and put an ice pack on my head."
"Are you sure?" Clara asks her with much concern in her voice.
"No, really I'm fine. Let's just go home. Some Pinot is calling my nam e, and a hot shower. I just want to forget about all of this."
They didn't exchange much between them the rest of the ride home. Clara unlocked the door and Arleen was taking her time making her way up the steps and inside their two bedroom 2 bath town home.
The sun was completely invisible now, the half crescent moon hung in the sky with hardly any stars showing this close to town. The porch light clicked on and Clara waved Arleen inside asking her if she needed any help. "No, just a bit dizzy, I've got this."
Arleen makes her way inside and off to her room. She slipped off her boots in her room, next to her queen sized bed and fell with all her weight and the weight of what was most likely a concussion weighing her down. What was happening? Geez, I could have died. They left me alive for some reason. I can't go back into work so soon. Maybe the cameras will have picked up something. I need to call my boss.
She feels around looking for her phone and she fishes it out of her right pocket. Seventeen missed calls from a number she didn't recognize. "I don't know who that is, gotta call my boss and tell them what happened." Phone behind ringing, Marco answers on the third ring. "Arleen, where were you today you sick or something?"
"Do you have a moment?" She asks
"Yeah, what's going on?" Marco replies.
"Last night, something happened I took out the trash to the dumpster and woke up this evening in the woods 20 miles from home. Can you look at the cameras and see if it shows me leaving or anyone coming up behind me or something? I'm at a loss for what happened."
"Yeah, I'm here at work right now. I'll go back and pull the tapes and call you if I find anything. Hey, are you okay.. you should call the police or go to the hospital or something. My employees don't need to be worried about things like this at my establishment. I'm going to look at the tapes and talk to some of the officers and get a patrol around here. Woods you say? Beats all I ever fucking saw or heard. I'm just glad you're calling. Get some rest return to work when you feel up to it. No rush . I'll let you know what I find out I'm going to pull the tapes now. Talk with you later Hun uh huh bye bye."
"Well that went over better than I thought it would. What could they really say though? I woke up alone in the woods bloodied and bruised."
It was two days before she heard from her boss again. Marco called that Tuesday with nothing much to share, he reviewed the tapes. Of the locations the two security cameras were placed, neither show me leaving the restaurant Arleen says aloud. "The footage shows me carrying the trash outside and not ever coming back in?"
"Yeah, uh huh that's all I could tell from the cameras, I need to install one to view the back alley with the dumpsters. It was almost closing hour when I got abducted, the cook must have though I just went home without saying anything. "I can't believe this happened. I'll be returning to work next week."
"Are you sure?" Marco asks. "I don't want you rushing to get back in here, already told you your jobs not going anywhere."
"Yeah, I'm ready. I'll be there Monday eight a.m."
"Sounds good," he replied.
