I come up to the corner and I turn right. I make sure we are clear of the dead bodies as I park out front of the dollar store strip mall. I turn to speak to Matthew. I also reach out to comfort him as I notice the radio still playing a different song, I turn the music off. “Matthew are you okay, I’m sorry I yelled at you I Just didn’t want you to see…” I stopped myself, he was too young to know I thought. I then continued to speak to him as he looked up with tears in his eyes and I unbuckled myself to get closer to him. “Matthew, I need you to listen to me the first time so I can safely protect all of you, ok? He nods and I continue to speak to him. “Even if I tell you to hide and be quiet or if we all need to hide and be quiet, okay?”  Babies start to cry so I make my way to the back. I unbuckle the car seat and turn it sideways in the back seat and I sit wear the car seat used to be in the middle back seat. I rock the baby boy and speak to him lovingly. “shhh, shhh it okay sweetie, it’s okay.” and he quiets down I turn to Matthew I hug him sideways and I notice he had the emergency bag with him and as I’m still holding him I pick it up the bag and put it on my lap I lift my other arm that was holding him and use it to unzip the bag and I open it to see medical supplies, food, drinks enough for lunch time and supper, baby clothing, teddy’s and gifts. Looking up at my radio I see it’s now 1:00pm with everything that’s happened we didn’t think to eat. I speak excitedly to Matthew. “Oh my, you and your baby bro must be hungry, did you even eat today?” I thought mom thought of everything. Matthew replies “yeah breakfast but never got to finish it all so I’m so hungry now can I eat please?” “Oh yes of course dear” I handed a sandwich and orange juices and a bag of cheesy chips to him and his face lit up. “How did you know, only my mom, Bethany, knows it’s my favorite chips and juice. “Wow!” Matthew smiles and bites right into his sandwich and juices. I giggle and grave a sandwich, Pepsi, and a bag of dill pickle chips and speak. “Must be my superpowers.” We both laugh then as we continue to eat, I finish my sandwich and say “when we are done eating our lunch we will go in and gather some necessities like more food, new clothes for you and your sister and we will have to find food for your brother too.  I look over at the baby and stroke him from his head to his belly and smile at him as he peeks and smiles back. “Aww so cute, yeah you know it too.” The baby then giggles from his sleep and then continues to sleep. I drink my Pepsi like almost halfway down the bottle and close the lid back on and put it in my cup holder that is by the empty driver’s seat and laid my unopened chips next to the bottle then I lean forward I grave the keys from the ignition and clipped the keys to my jean pans and then sat back down and unbuckled Matthew as he still was munching on the last bites of his sandwich and his opened bag of cheesy chips. I look in the back pocket of the passenger seat and pulled two of my two long blue scarfs “my two favorites that always travel with me for an emergency fashion but in this case, I will turn it into a carrier so I can carry just your baby brother and I don’t half to worry about any extra weight, you almost done?”  I say as I wrap the scarfs around my front body and tie it in the back after perfecting it, I then turn towards the baby and I unbuckle him and carefully take him out of his carseat, as I did this Matthew said “Yes”. I put the baby in my scarf then I turned it into the baby carrier. As I did this, I saw his baby blue eyes open, and I said a name upon him as I continued looking at him. “Hey, their Jacob Jarod rose Red- Hester.” I say with a smile, I then turn to Matthew who is holding a shocked look on his face. “Oh, don’t worry I hyphenated our last names. You still get to keep your last names I just thought since I’m going to be taking care of you all you could also take on our last name too. Also, we cannot just keep calling him "Baby I won’t have it.” I am a little worried as I look over at Bethany and how she will take this, but I end with a smile anyways. Suddenly Matthew leans towards us, hugs me and his brother Jacob. Thank you I’m so happy you’ll keep us, and I love that! You gave him a name and that you added your last name to be ours! I am speechless from that response, so I smile when something comes to my mind and Melody speaks. “Well, who doesn’t want adorable kids like you all.” Ending with a smile and I stare at Matthew then look down at Jacob who is smiling with his eyes closed once more, then I look over at Bethany with sadness in my eyes for her she is still unconscious and hurt badly. I turn, opening my door and saying, “let’s go”.  I got out, shutting my door and Watching Matthew do the same I grabbed Matthew’s hand, and we made our way to the dollar store first Matthew stopped. “Wait, my sister, we can't leave her out here, for those monsters to get her.” “She actually is a lot safer out in the car plus how could I carry her and your brother?” Matthew shrugs his shoulders and says “ok” with a sigh. “Hey tell you what…” I say as I open the door to the dollar store where the power is flickering a bit. “You can get some toys here and something for your sister too, okay? Matthews face lights up with joy I grave a shopping cart and we go through the summer section by the door we enter first and I reached for a pair of flip flops that say size 8 1⁄2 they are blue with a beach theme on them my kind of shoe size as a guess for Bethany’s feet size plus her running shoes were damaged and dirty.  Then beside the flip flops were some spaghetti strapped shirts. I graved a medium size one of each colour again going off my size because we were close in size. I grabbed some caps, a red one that said Eh. I’m a true Canadian, I picked out a blue cap with a picture I didn’t pay attention to for myself and another blue cap that said Bethany. “Perfect for Bethany right Matthew?” He smiles and nods, then we make are to the toy isle, “nothing too big just get small toys we can carry and the will fit in the car” he runs up and down the isles look at the toys he picks out small toy cars small game boards shows me them first I nod in acceptance he puts chess and checker along with snakes and ladder game, memory cards and playing cards “these playing cards can be for you and Bethany to play when she wakes up” I smile. “That's sweet,” he picks up slime and putty. We then moved on to the beauty Isle. I grab brushes, combs, pony’s, shampoo, conditioner and for some fun I pick up makeup products. Then I continued to grab roll on scented deodorants, one of each kind that they left, which was only about four left. It's the preferred one I like. Grabbed 4 showering towels and Razors on the way out of the aisle and merged into the baby aisle and graved all the necessities for Jacob and then I grabbed toys for him and a really cute all blue with thick silk ends and soft blanket, then food, baby treats. “Okay let's get to the food and snack Aisle then we are done here in this place we can go to Lammle’s western store next door of course we will drop this off at the car first.” “Okay” Matthew replies. In the food and snack aisle I get rye bread and white bread along with peanut butter and jam then other condiments, soup cans, pasta and a bunch of bowl & cup noodle soups. Then I got different kinds of chips like cheesy chips, onion rings, dill pickle chips, all dressed chips. I grabbed doubles of those chips then graved some dark 70% chocolate and some milk chocolate bars. Before leaving I laid $20 on the counter we were about to leave when Jacob fussed a bit and Matthew spoke up, “why are you leaving money no one is here because of those monsters that came?” “Well, if I left without paying it is called stealing which is bad even though the world is being threatened by these monsters, we still have to obey the law, I also want to teach you for when this is all over.” I say this as I put the items, we got into the plastic bags all the food and snacks went together, clothing, caps and shoes went together, then the toys went into a separate bag and back into the shopping cart We then moved towards the exit doors and Matthew nodded. We dropped all the dollar store bagged items into the car, food items stayed in the back seat along with the baby necessities, and everything else went into the trunk. The thud of the trunk woke Jacob and he started to cry. “Oh no, sweetie, Shhh”
