“She vanished just as the year ended.” Could be read in one of the pages, which was left in the diary, I just found in a box under the gravestone for the dog. Which turned out, that it was never used that for. But who was she, I wondered and why was this house teared apart in a way, which was quietly odd for a harmless looking nursery school teacher.
Some of the colleagues are still in the house, trying to find out, what happened to that poor elderly lady, who would have soon be retired from her job. Why kill someone like her and for all, why in such a way?
“Mam?’ Defective chief inspector Donnelley turns around and sees Constable Scott standing there with an unknown male. This unknown gives her his hand and says: “I am Inspector Liam D. Lynch. I heard, you might need help up here?” “Chief Inspector Freya Donnelley, please to meet you.” She replies. “ And yes, I could need some help here, because I fear, it is something, which might have to do with the whole isle.” “I hope, that I am able to help you”, her male colleague from the free part of Ireland replied. Donnelley just nodes and heads back to the house, leaving Inspector Lynch behind at that moment. Not knowing what else to do at that moment, he follows Constable Scott to the car. You can hear her deep and commanding voice from the inside of the little cottage.
“May I have your attention please?” soon it seems that she got it. “Thank you. Well, I really want that you turn over every freaking inch of this cottage, because there must be a reason for all this. It seems like, someone did all this in a very unstable moment of this persons life. We have to find as many puzzle-pieces as possible, that we know, what the hell we are dealing here right now. Meanwhile I am heading back to the department and hope that Inspector Lynch from the Republic of Ireland has some information as well. Thank you.” She turns around and goes to the car, in which Constable Scott and Inspector Lynch are already waiting for her. She steps in and reaches to the front to take a pack of menthol cigarettes in front of her. She holds it backwards and offers it to the Inspector, but he denies and mentions, that he tries to quit it. She takes one and lights it. Inspector Lynch tried to start a conversation but as he observed her, he realised, that she was in her thoughts while going through the few pages which are left in that black note-book on her lap.
In the cottage one suddenly says, “Sir, I think I found something in here, although I am not sure if that might help”. In a little shed in the backyard, there was a barrel, made of tin. In there several items, which were only half burned. “Well done Constable. We have to be careful, but it looks like, someone tried to burn it, but something else stopped it. Might be the person, who did the crime here. Still, it is a good trace. Be careful by handling this evidence.” The Constable nods and replies a “Yes Sir.”
Meanwhile the car with the 3 police members stops at the parking area of the department. Chief Inspector Donnelley, Constable Scott and Inspector Lynch are going into the department. The Chief Inspector places the bag, which she carries on a counter and says in a loud commanding voice. “May I have your attention for a few Minutes please?” All in the department stopped what they just did, even that one at the phone, who mentions:’ Lady, I have your phone number and call you back as soon as possible.” You can hear a woman with an older voice saying “But” as he turns the telephone receiver around to hangs up.
The Chief Inspector continues: “Thank you. I want you to welcome our colleague Inspector Liam David Lynch from the Republic of Ireland, who will help us with the recent case and please, should he have something important to say, while I am not around, listen to him. I really think this is something bigger we are on at the moment and so we should work together as good as possible.” Many different voices with “Yes Mam” are heard. The Chief Inspector replies: “Thank you.” She takes the bag from the counter, with the take away food they bought on the way to the department and turns around to her colleagues. “Let’s go to the meeting room over there, I am starving.” All three are heading to the room and the Chief Inspector closes the door behind her, so that they will not be interrupted too often. She puts the items out in front of her and looks at her colleague. “Are you alright Inspector Lynch?” The Inspector replies: “Well, I have to admit, that I never tried such food, although we have now also some Chinese take aways.”. She smiles and says, “believe me, if you taste it once, you are getting addicted to it. The only thing I am still doing, I take cutlery I am not good in using these sticks, but we are among us, so it does not matter I would say.” With a smile she gives him some cutlery. Inspector Lynch nods and takes it. Chief Inspector Donnelley continues: “Well, let us continue with that. What I was wondering, from who this diary is and what the hell this ML could be. I am sure it is a short form for something, but I am not sure at the moment, if it is standing for a company, a name, or something else. It is also written in a odd way. it would not match to the teacher.” Inspector Lynch looks at her questioning. “Well, it sounds like, that person who wrote it, was much younger. More in her teens.” He replies: “May I have a look at it.” She mentions: “Sure” and turns the black notebook/diary to him.
On that page he could read: “today one of the other girls was punished for braking a cup. They put a thick string around her neck and she is only allowed to eat from the floor like a dog. We are not allowed to speak, heaving contact to others, for all outside of the ML and we also would not be allowed to write it down. But I do not care anymore. I rather die, than not writing it down, because I hope one they, the world will know and hear, what these freaking evil people are doing do us.” He covers his mouth in shock after he was reading it. The Chief Inspector says: “Yes I know, it is hard to read these things. It seems like most of the pages are missing anyways but what can be found is really mind-blowing. It sounds very horrible, like….” She couldn’t finish her sentence, because he was holding the hand up, for saying pleas stop. Inspector Lynch says: “I guess I know what this is all about.” The Chief inspector looks very amazed at him. “Do not tell me, that you just came in and already solved that case?” He replies: “Might be destiny, but I had an aunt, who was sent to the Magdalene Laundry, as she was pregnant with one of my cousins. It is said, that her child died back then. What she told us, what happened there, we could not believe it, because it sounded so cruel, but with this here,…..” Chief Inspector Donnelley looked at him stunned and after she took a cup of coffee, she sits down slowly with the cup in her hand. “So you mean, that could be someone, who was sent in there and might have found something out, about this woman?” The Inspector nods and says, don’t you have also such institutions in Northern Ireland as well?” The Chief Inspector repines: “Yes we had, but they are already closed by now.” He nod and says: “I see. Well, we still have one running in Dublin, but as I heard, it shell be closed soon as well. I suggest, we have a look there and we will have also a look, if that woman, was working in one of them and who that person might be, who killed her and why. I would suggest, that I make a phone call and we are driving to Dublin and hopefully find more, because it must be a reason, when someone gets murdered like that.” The Chief Inspector agrees.
Inspector Lynch heads to one of the phones in the department and arranges everything. As he comes back he says: “Well, they will help us, so good they can.” The Chief Inspector asks: “Really?” Inspector Lynch replies: “That has to do with the mass grave we found in 1993 on a former convent in Dublin at the grounds of High Park.” The Chief inspector replies stunned: “A mass grave?” Inspector Lunch says: “Yes. They lost money at the stock marking and sold a part of their land to cover it and while the new owner started to build on it, they found 133 unmarked graves. Later on they found 22 more so in total there were 155. Since than they are very cooperative. Or let’s say, they have to be.” The Chief inspector still stays there only with her mouth open. Inspector Lynch only says: “I know. It was an unbelievable feeling, for all when you know, your own aunt was in one of them. She is traumatised until today and I would not wonder, if that would be one of such women, who had to be there.”
The Chief Inspector nods and soon she and Inspector Lynch are heading to the parked car of Inspector Lynch. The Chief Inspector has the notebook with her as well as a map, so that she can give Inspector Lynch the direction if needed. Both are quiet during driving down to Dublin.
Soon they are arriving at the property of the last remaining Magdalene Laundry. A nun, in her middle ages, comes out of the entrance and greets them. She tells them, to follow her and leads them into an office.
The Chief Inspector looks around and says: “There are not many here anymore.” The nun replies: ‘That is, because we will close by the end of this year.” The Chief Inspector only replies with a “oh”. As they were in the office the nun says: “please, take a seat. Do you want coffee, tea, or anything else? Are you hungry?” The Chief Inspector says: “Well I would like to have a glass of water if possible.” Inspector Lynch says: “Nothing for me, thank you.” The nun pushes the button on a phone at her desk and says: “Sister Theresa, can you bring us some water and for me Tea please.” At the end of the line you can hear a “Yes mother superior.” Soon a younger nun with the requested items arrives. She places all the items on the table including a bowl of biscuits and leaves. “I have always some biscuits with my tea. My little sin.” While she takes one, do dip it in her tea she asks: “How can I help you exactly.” “Well” Inspector Lynch started, this here is a colleague from Northern Ireland. Her name is Chief Inspector Donnelley and she is just involved in a nasty homicide.” He nods at his colleague and the Chief Inspector starts. “Well, this is one of the items we found and well, there was always something found with ML in it. It seems to be a diary, but it looks like, that pages are missing.” The nun puts out her hand and asks: “May I?” The Chief Inspector gives it to her. The nun looks through it and said then: “It seems like a diary, you are right. But there are clearly pages, which got ripped out.” “Yes, that is true,”, the Chief Inspector replies. The nun was getting a bit ashamed. ‘You see, that is one of our darkest thing, we did in our convention. I am not proud about it, what many of my colleagues did. I was never agreeing with the cruelty which happened in some of them. You see, it would have been also forbidden, to have such a diary. I will never understand, how they could treat these girls like this. Many of the conventions were worse than prisons at that time. Because I never agreed with it, I will do everything now, what I can do with my position to help you and have to confess, I am really ashamed of these women, who acted in that cruel way, which I never understood. May our lord forgive them their sins.” With the last words she makes a cross-sign over her body.
Both Inspectors are thanking the nun, who continues. “Well what you know of the person who was killed?” The Chief Inspector gives her a pass board and says:” I have to confess, that I am now not sure anymore, if this one is really her name now. For us, she was a woman, who was working as a teacher in a nursery school and would have retired at the end of the year. Now I am not sure, if that is even her real name.” “I see” the nun replies. “Wait a minute.” She rises from her chair and gets behind her to the shelf, where a lot of ring binders are seen. “let me see.” She looks again at the pass-board and reaches out to one of the ring binder, which says 1930 – 1940. She goes with it back to her chair and says: “Even if she might have changed her name, she could not change her age too much, so we might find something in here. What we always did and do, or at least some, we write everything down. The photos in here are black and white, but I am sure, if she is here somewhere, also in a younger version, we will find her. These are the women, who were born in the decade 1930 – 1940. Should she look younger or older then we assume, we also should go through the other two binders, but in one of them she will be for sure. I suggest, that each of us is taking one of them and is looking for her.” With that she goes back to the shelf and gives Chief Inspector Donnelley the binder which was for the decade 1940 – 1950 and Inspector Lynch from 1920 – 1930. Before they started, she asks one more time. “Are you sure, you do not want anything else?” Now both asks for coffee. She nods and orders coffee and more biscuits. All three are going through the binders and after a while Inspector Lynch says: “Oh my god, I think that is her, but then she would be even a bit older than in the pass board.” He has a side, which shows a photo, similar to that one in the pass board, only younger with the year 1927 as well, as another name. There was the original name listed and the name, as she got, as she became a nun. To make sure, they do not miss anything, they went through carefully all the others at the other two binders, but not one came as close as this photo. As they were finished it was dinner-time.
Mother superior Mary says: “It is very late now. I guess you inspector have a house nearby?” “Yes I live with my family in the city centre and well, we have to find a hotel for the Chief Inspector.” The nun nods and turns to Chief Inspector Donnelley. “If you feel comfortable enough, you can stay in a room in our building.” Well, I have nothing with me for changing, etc..” The nun smiles and says: “We can wash your cloth which you are waring right now and give you something else for the night. I am sure, we have also a new toothbrush as well as soap for you. I also want you do invite you do dine with us, who are still here in this convent.” “Alright” the Chief Inspector replies. “Can I use your phone? Only that people up know, where I am at the moment.” The nun moves the phone to the Chief Inspector and says: “Go ahead.”
Soon Inspector Lynch leaves the convent and Chief Inspector Donnelley follows the nun to the dining hall of the convent, which looks ridicules huge now, because hardly people are left in the convent. The Chief Inspector feels a bit uncomfortable, because she is not a catholic, but soon realises that these nuns are not as she thought they might be. It seems like, that most of them are not as dark, as there past once was, only an older woman was sitting alone at a corner of the room, watching them a bit angrily and soon disappeared. The Chief inspector asks the rest of them: “What was this all about?” One of the younger nuns replied: “That is a former mother superior. It is rare, that they lose this position, but she did some not nice things, as we heard and now, she is again in the same position as we are. She might not like, that you are here, but superior mother Mary is a good soul and I am sure, she will look after you.” This conversation stuck in Donnelley’s mind as well as the grim looks of that older woman. She was glad, that she was allowed to read more in the binders at the office, because she could hardly sleep. The next morning, Inspector Lynch was collecting Chief Inspector Donnelley at 8 am. As they are heading to Inspector Lynch car, he says: “You look tired.” The Chief Inspector replies: “I slept only about 2 hours.” Inspector Lynch looks surprised and says: “Don’t tell me, it was because of a ghost.” The Chief Inspector laughs and says: “I guess that would have given me less troubles.” “Was it something you where reading about?” The Inspector asked. The Chief Inspector says: “No, it was an older woman who gave me the chills. The younger nuns told me, that she is a former mother superior and that it is rare, that you lose that position, once you have it. I had the feeling, she did not like my presents at all and I was unable to sleep, because I was not sure, what she might do. Depends, why she was uncomfortable with my presents.” Inspector Lynch nods and replies: “That really sounds, that a ghost would have been more fun.” As they arrived in the department Inspector Lynch was working, they started to have a look, if they find something about that family of that nursery school teacher. After a while on the Computer, Inspector Lynch says: “I think I found something. It seems like, that her family is from the Galway area and that would match with the convent she was in. I would suggest, that we are driving over there, just let me make a call, so that the Garda in Galway knows, we are coming.” Soon Inspector Lynch is back in the main area of the department and both are heading to Lynch’s car.
A woman in her 30s stands at a graveyard and puts some flowers down with the words: “I did it. She paid for what she did to us. She destroyed us, but now she is in hell. I made her suffer, like she let us suffer! Soon we will see us again mum. I love you” Silent tears are running over the woman’s cheeks. She turns around and walks away.
Meanwhile Inspector Lynch and Chief Inspector Donnelley arrived at the Garda station in Galway. The colleagues gave them an address, where a younger brother of this woman, who died in Northern Ireland is still living. As they are parking their car, a woman in her end 20s heads to the address, they want to go. “Mam?” The woman turns around. “Yes?” “I am Inspector Lynch and this is my colleague from Northern Ireland Chief Inspector Donnelley. Are you a relative of Mr. O’Reilly or are you working for him?” “What?” The woman replies. “Is my father alright?” “Yes.” Inspector Lynch says: “At least I….he got interrupted by a man who stands in the open door. “What is wrong? Did something happened?” “Mr. Thomas O’Reilly?” “Yes.” “May we come in? There happened a crime up in the North and it seems like, it is an older sister of you.” Mr. O’Reilly was stunned. “My older sister? I was told, she died decades ago.” Inspector Lynch continues: “May we come in? It would be more private.” The man in his early 50s replies: “Of course. I am sorry. Are you sure it could be my sister?” “When we are inside we show you what we have and then we know more.” “You are right!” Mr. O’Reilly says. As all were seated at the dining room, he asks, if they want to have something. All were agreeing, that tea would be great. O’Reilly has always a pot with hot water, so the tea was very fast prepared. This time Chief Inspector Donnelley is starting the conversation: “Mr. O’Reilly. Why did you say, that you were told that your sister died decades ago?” He starts: “My sister and I are 15 years apart. I was the youngest one, while she was the second born child. She was born in 1927 and was a “wild girl” for that time. I was still very young as she got pregnant from some marine-officer and was sent away to the laundries…..” Chief Inspector Donnelley interrupts, “They sent her to the Magdalene Laundry?” “Yes Mam. There was also one in Galway at that time.” She looks at Inspector Lynch, who takes now the sheet out, which they got from mother superior Mary in Dublin. He gives it to him and did not had to ask a lot, because O’Reilly immediately says: “Yes that is her! That was the day, when she came into the convent, but I do not know, what the connection is with Northern Ireland now.” “When would she had died?” The Chief Inspector asks. “Let me see. I was 3 or maximum 4 as they said, that she has to leave and I was in my early teens as they said, that she died in the convent. We had even a funeral, although it seems more like a relive for my parents, because they were very ashamed of her.” The two colleagues are looking at each other. “Can you tell us, when that funeral happened?” “As I mentioned, I was in my teens, wait. Maybe there is still something in my fathers box. He collected some personal things and put it in there. One moment.” He leaves the room and comes back with a wooden box. He opens it and moves some items around and then says: “Ah, here it is!” He hands them over a note which said that the funeral took place in April 1954. “May I have it?” Chief Inspector Donnelley asks. “I will bring it back, or at least send it back to you, but it might help.” O’Reilly replies: “Yes, sure.” “Thank you.” Inspector Lynch asks: “May I use your phone?” O’Reilly also agreed to this. While Inspector Lynch heads out to the hallway, where the phone is placed O’Reilly asks: “What happened up in your area?” “Mr. O’Reilly. A woman in her mid 60s was found brutally murdered. Her cottage was turned upside down and we have to find out now, what the hack happened. And it seems like, she took over another name and lived another life up in Northern Ireland.” “Sweet Jesus” is all what O’Reilly could reply. Inspector Lynch says: “Whatever comes out, we will inform you for sure, if she was it, or if she was it not. Also thank you for your help Mr. O’Reilly.” Both are heading back to Lynch’s car. In the car the Chief Inspector asks: “Where we are going now? Lynch replies: “Back to the convent in Dublin. I asked the Garda station here, if they have something about the Magdalene Laundry from Galway in there achieve and they said, that it is all in the convent in Dublin right now. But in between, I would say, we are taking something to eat. What about fish and chips? I saw something as we left the National Road.” “Well, that sounds like a good Idea,” The Inspectors are heaving their late lunch at the stand and heading then back to Dublin to the convent.
In a B&B a woman in her 30th is seen, who dresses in the best cloths she has. She leaves the room and soon a taxi arrives. The taxi driver helps her with the suit case and she steps in. In the car she says to the driver: “To the Hilton please”. The driver looks a bit confused but nods and starts the engine.
In the office of the Mother Superior: “I am so sorry we have to bother you again. We thought that the Garda station in Galway might have more information, but they told us,….” Mother superior Mary interrupts: “That all about the laundries are still in our achieves. Sorry for the interruption. So, you want to know, if she changed the name in here, or after it, or something like that?” “I would say yes,” Lunch replies with a confused voice. “Well, I have to confess, that is my other sin, I do not only read the bible, I also like crime-stories.” Mother superior Mary says with a little smile. She rises and goes to the shelf behind her with the words: “Let’s have a look. But I have to warn you, because I heard not really good things from that convent and as I read that notes, I was stunned myself.” “Why?” Chief inspector Donnelley asks. With handing her the binder, the woman says: “You will see it soon.” The Chief Inspector opens it and soon you hear: “Sweet Jesus on earth.” “What’s the matter?” Lynch asks. “There stands that many of the babies, which were born in the convent in Galway, where separated from their mothers right after their birth. They were given to wealthy Americans, who could not get a child naturally. You can say, they were sold. And well, they did quite get some money out of them.” “As I said, the dark side of these conventions.” Mother superior Mary says in a sad voice. “What else can be found?” Lynch asks. “Let me see,” the chief inspector replies. Suddenly: ‘Oh my god!” Donnelley says. “What is it?” Inspector Lynch replies. “There was a Sister Catherine, who seemed to have messed up big, at a birth of a girl. The mother got infected and died soon after it, while the girl survived. It was in April 1954 and it happened several times until 1961. Always when that sister should help these mothers, … died!” “Does it says how it happened?” “No, but there is something else. There is also a nun who died in April 1954 and that name sounds very familiar. She was known as sister Frances but her real name was Maeve Duffy!” “That’s the name of the teacher, isn’t it?” Inspector Lynch asks. The Chief inspector nods and continues. “Sister Frances was at that stage 80 years old and no relatives where found.” She looks at Lynch, who replies: “So O’Reilly took it over?” “At least it seems like, that she let her family believe, that she died.” “But did not someone else know or tell the truth?’ Lynch asks. Mother superior Mary blowed her nose, because she was crying and then said, that the two should wait in her office, because she will have someone, they can talk to.
A bit later she came back with the older nun, who gave the Chief Inspector chills the other day.
That nun sits down and says: “My name is Sister Roberta. I have known, that this day might arrive. Does someone has a recorder?” Inspector Lynch nods and goes to his car, coming back with a recorder. And the nun starts to tell her story: “I was in the convent in Galway at that time, as Aoife O’Reilly arrived. I am slightly older and was in the convent already since 1,5 years. She was 18 at the time she arrived and in the last half of her pregnancy. You started do see it. She had a still born child and took it as the results of her sins. She was converting on her own to the convent to become a nun, but for all, she wanted to fight against the devil, which she was sure, was possessing these young women, who came into the convent. Each year, she seemed to be more violent then the previous. Many of us, including myself, got very afraid of her. For all to those girls who were under 18 and came in pregnant, she was merciless. She also thought, that her family turned her into an evil person, that is, why she made them believe, she did die in April 1954. Because she wanted to chase the evil out of her life, but did not realise how toxic she was herself. She let these women work until the day of their labour. Some were too weak and died after it. She set up deals, with rich Americans, who adopted these children, who survived. The Mother superior who ruled there until her death in 1961 loved O’Reilly’s methods, because she was not less cruel than she was. At the death of Mother superior Agnetha I was the oldest at this convent and maybe it was my destiny that I got elected as the new Mother Superior. The first I did was, that I threw this evil person out of the convent. Right after she had to go, it felt already much better, then all the time we had to live with her. I had no idea, that she took over a new Identity and went to North Ireland to take over a job at the nursery school. I only hope she was not too evil with these children. My apologise, that I hold all this back for so long. She got murdered you said?” “Yes, in a cruel way’”, the Chief Inspector replied. The older woman says: “Finally. I know that might surprise you, but if you would have witnessed, what I had witnessed, you are sometimes just wondering, how it could happen, that someone like her can do such things for such a long time, without the punishment of god.” The Chief Inspector nods and says: “May I ask you, why you are not a Mother superior anymore?” “Of course” Sister Roberta replies. “It is simple as that. They closed the convent in Galway back in 1984 and well, I also did not want to have so much responsibility again. I enjoy more the quietness of the convent here.” The Chief Inspector smiles and says: “I can totally understand that. Thank you for your help.” “Well, at least I have one thing less to take with me, when I might have to leave this earth,” the nun replied. She gets up from the chair and heads to the door. Both Inspectors are thanking Mother Superior Mary and Sister Roberta for their help. Again it got late. Chief Inspector Donnelley says: “Well, now we know at least, how she came to that name, and why she did it, but we still have no clue, who did it.” Lynch nods. Donnelley continues: “it is already late. You should go do your family, I will have a look how many were giving birth from 1954 to 1961. Maybe we can find them among these children?” Lunch agrees: “Good idea, although I think, that might be some.” “That is true, but with knowing the convent it will be already more easy.” Lynch leaves and Donnelley turns around, taking a binder with “Galway convent” written on it.
At the hotel, a mid-30 woman is heaving one of the best meals, which could be found in the hotels restaurant. The staff comes in with a little cake an singing “Happy Birthday.” As asking how old she turns, she replies, that she will only get 36, because she can now leave in peace. Not knowing what to reply, they just overhear it and were very kind to her, including a champaign at the bar. She asks for a sleeping pill and goes back to her room. She booked one of the finest, they had for her that day. She takes a bath and goes into her bed.
Because she slept so bad the previous night, Chief Inspector Donnelley did not hear her alarm clock. At 8 am there was a hard knock at the door and a male alarming voice asks. “Chef Inspector Donnelley, is everything alright?” Donnelley just realises, that someone knocked at the door, suddenly the door opens and Inspector Lynch runs in. Chief Inspector Donnelley is looking scared at him: “What happened?” “Well, they tried already to wake you up, but they couldn’t, now they thought, you might have taken something.” “What?” the chief Inspector replied. “Why should I take something? Wait, how late is it?” Inspector Lynch looks at his watch and mentions, “now it is 7 past 8.” Donnelley says. “7 past 8?” Oh I am so sorry! Oh my,….” Inspector Lynch replies with a gentle smile: “It is alright, I will go outside and have a cigarette. Take your time.” He turns around and walks out the door. Chief Inspector Donnelley takes a very quick shower and puts on her cloth, which seemed to be washed again.” She runs to Lynch, who leans at the hood of his car, with his cigarette. Now she realises it. Donnelley says: “Did you not try do quit?” He says: “Yes, but at the moment, there is no chance for it.” He offers her one and she takes it thankfully. Both are stepping in the car and Lynch asks: “And? Could you find something out?” “Yes, there are a few, but not as much as I thought. The problem is, we still do not know, if it is a male or female, but there are in total 10 children at the time from 1954 – 1961 who got adopted by Americans.” “Well, that is not too bad. I am sure, you have names?” “Yes, I have” she replied. “Mother superior Mary was kind enough, that I could take these pages with me, but she also mentioned, that I have to be careful with them and I had to promise her, that we bring the originals back. I am also allowed to copy them.” “That sounds really good and it really seems like, that she wants to help, so good she can.” The Chief Inspector nods and adds; “I also could read more about the methods of that teacher. To be honest, I am not wondering anymore, that she ended up, as she did.” From that time on, until they arrived at the department, Lynch was working, they were quiet. As soon as Chief Inspector Donnelley has been shown, where she can copy the files, she started with it, while Inspector Lynch started to have a look, where they should start in the US, to look after these “children”.
Meanwhile the young woman was heading into the City Centre. She found out, where she can get, certain pleasures of sexual nature. Soon she is seen with a young feller, who follows her into a taxi.
In the department several officers where now working on the case and call some departments in the US. After a while a constable comes into Lynch’s office. “Sir!” “Yes Constable Nolan?’ The Inspector replied. I have here a women, who is missing since about 2 weeks down at the Florida Keys, with the name Emily Rachel Brown. Her parents are wealthy. The father has a well-known real estate company there.” “What’s the name of this man?” “His name is Richard.” Richard Brown Junior” “Thank you Constable.” Lynch looks at Donnelley. “Did you get that?” “Yes and I think, that I was reading that name, let me have a look,….Here! Look at that! A Girl called Eve was given do a Richard and Rachel Brown. There is not a company mentioned, but a Richard Brown Senior who was mentioned. I would say, that his father paid for it.” “Sounds right, and I guess, they might have a reason, that they changed the name.” The Chief Inspector nods and says: “I will have a look, if he took over his father’s company, or something like that.” She goes to the computer and soon she says: “As I thought so. His father died about 8 month ago and he took over the company. Interesting. His father gave some of his money to Emily.” “That is indeed interesting” Inspector Lynch replied. He continues: “Is there also the name of the real mother in the notes of the convent?” “Yes, her real mothers second name was O’Conner.” Chief Inspector Donnelley replies. “Do you think, that she might travel under this name?” Lunch nods. “It could be. We should have a look who came in about 2 weeks ago from Miami.” After a phone call to the airport, they found out, that a Eve O’Conner was coming to Ireland 10 days ago. “Well that would be enough time, to do what she did.” “That is true.” Inspector Lynch replied, “but were might she be now is the question”. “Damn she could be anywhere now.” Chief Inspector Donnelley replies. The phone rings and a internal call comes in. Inspector Lynch picks it up: “What’s the matter constable?” “The hospital is on the phone, they got a phone call from the Hilton hotel. They said that an American seemed attempt suicide. I think, they are just heading to the hospital with her in the Ambulance.” “Damn it!” Lynch hangs up and says: “ I guess, I know already where the missing person is.” “Pardon me?” Donnelley replies. “There was an American, who attempt suicide, in the Hilton. We do not have time to lose, because as I understood, she opened her arms.” Both are running out of the department to Lunch’s car, as fast as possible and heading to the hospital. A doctor welcomes them. “how is she?” Inspector Lynch asks. “Well, I do not think, that she will make it. She lost already too much blood and is very weak, She has a book with her, she does not let go.” Inspector Lynch and Chief Inspector Donnelley are heading into the room, where she is. She is very weak. Donnelley comforts her head. “At least now, someone is coming. I have known, that at least an angel will give me one time in my life comfort.” “Don’t speak too much.” Donnelley says. You need your strength. “No, I do not.” The woman replies. She gives Donnelley the note book, which seems to be another dairy. One of the last words of the woman, which are spoken with a weak voice are: “Never forget, but for all never forgive. For all those, who are the demons, among humans. If you do not punish them, no one will. Karma, and all the other things are not existing.” She looks at the end of her bed, where no one was and she smiles and sights “mum”, than she dies in Donnelley’s arms.
