There are more of us, and we’re here to help.”The man staggered forward, as if he couldn’t quite believe it, and sank to his knees when the food was placed in front of him. He clutched it to his chest, his hands shaking. “Thank you. I thought... I thought everyone was gone. I’ve been alone for days.”“You’re not alone,” Emmalyn said softly, kneeling beside him. “God has always had a way of bringing people together, even in the darkest of times.”The man’s eyes filled with tears, and he looked up at her, a flicker of hope in his gaze. “I thought I was the last one left.”“No,” Emmalyn said, a small smile touching her lips. “There’s still mercy in this world. We’re still here.”They spent the rest of the day helping him. They gave him food, water, and blankets to keep warm. Emmalyn shared Annabeth’s journal with him, reading aloud from the verses that spoke of hope and trust in God. By the end of the afternoon, the man had regained some of his strength, and though he still had scars of the past, his eyes held a spark of life once more.As they prepared to leave, he stood shakily and looked at them. “I’ll never forget this. You saved me, when I thought there was no one left to care.”Emmalyn placed a hand on his shoulder. “God hasn’t forgotten you. And neither have we.”The next town was different. The survivors stayed close together as they walked down the main street, their eyes scanning for any signs of life.They approached a woman sitting by the door of a small house, her back against the wooden frame. She looked up as they approached, her expression guarded but not hostile. Her face was drawn, worn with worry, but there was a quiet strength in her gaze.“We’re not here to take anything from you,” Emmalyn said, offering her a soft smile. “We’ve got food and water. We can share what we have.”The woman eyed them for a long moment, then stood, her face softening slightly. “You’re the first people I’ve seen in days. There’s not much left, but... we’ve been holding on.”“We understand,” Emmalyn said. “We’ve all been holding on.”Clara stepped forward, holding out a sack of grain and dried meat. “Take what you need. There’s no catch. We’re just trying to help.”The woman’s eyes flickered with hesitation, but she reached for the sack and began to inspect the contents. “I don’t know how you’re all still going after everything that’s happened,” she said quietly. “Most people would’ve just given up.”Emmalyn’s expression softened. “It’s not about giving up. It’s about trusting that there’s something more than this—that we’re all part of a bigger story. God hasn’t forgotten any of us, even when it feels like the world is ending.”The woman looked down at the food in her hands, then back up at Emmalyn. “I used to go to church... before everything fell apart. But I stopped believing. I couldn’t understand why God would let this happen.”Emmalyn nodded. “I get it. I’ve asked the same questions. But the one thing I’ve learned through all of this is that God’s love doesn’t change, no matter how much the world does. We might not have all the answers, but we know that we’re not alone in this.”The woman wiped a tear from her eye and looked at the sack of food. “Maybe I’ve been wrong to turn my back on Him. Maybe it’s time to try again.”Emmalyn smiled, feeling the weight of her words settle into the woman’s heart. “It’s never too late to start over. God’s mercy is always waiting for us.”As they moved through the town, offering what food and aid they could, Emmalyn saw the shift in the people’s faces—something that had been lost for so long was beginning to take root again. Hope. Mercy. A future.By the time the sun dipped below the horizon, the survivors had made a difference in two towns.
