They ran. Not out of fear—though fear clung to them like smoke—but because they needed time. Silence. Distance from the script that seemed to follow their every move. Backstage, behind the heavy curtain, they found a narrow maintenance stairwell. Dimly lit. Unwritten. “He’s bound by what we give him,” Ava panted. “He’s powerful—but only inside the narrative.” Lila’s eyes widened. “So we write a new one.” Ava nodded. “Together. But it has to be from memory. From truth. That’s how we break his version.” They sat on the cold floor, knees touching, flipping open their Books. The pages still rippled with Silas’s influence—words rearranging themselves, shadows moving beneath the ink. But Ava closed her eyes. “Start with something real,” she whispered. “Something he can’t twist.” Lila took a breath. “My name is Lila Dawson. I was lonely. I thought writing a perfect life would save me.” The Ink stilled. “I was wrong,” she said. Ava wrote alongside her: I am Ava King. I found the Book by accident. I stayed because it made me feel seen. Powerful. She looked up. “But that power made me a pawn.” Their Books began to sync, lines forming in tandem: We are not the story.We are the pen. A tremor shook the walls of the stairwell. Lila gasped. “He knows.” “He’s losing control,” Ava whispered. “But we have to finish it.” They pressed their Books together. Ink bled between the covers. Merged. A single page formed, stitched from both their handwriting. And on it, they wrote: Silas loses his voice. Silas forgets the script. The characters awaken. A scream echoed from the auditorium above—furious, inhuman. They stood. “We write the ending,” Ava said. “For real this time,” Lila agreed. Together, they stepped back into the hall, holding the page like a blade.
