My name is Nakawan Ojalá. On the outside, I'm a 17 year old, But there’s something I must confess. I have a three-headed dog named Cerberus. Even though he might look like a big bad dog, on the inside, he’s as soft and sweet as any dog you might meet in the street! He’s the color blue and has the heart of a god, and is really sweet. So, if you find the right spot to scratch him, he’ll fall in love with you forever!
How did I even find this huge three-headed canine in the first place, you ask? Well, it all started when I was 12 years old.
In the middle of town there was a statue of Cerberus. You know the dog that has three heads and was the servant of Hades? Yeah, that is the statue I’m talking about. It was surrounded by buildings, and in the center of the park as well. There were some mountains in front of the statue that it was facing. One day, while I was out on a quick walk, I saw the statue and decided to take a look at it. When I was walking around the giant three-headed dog statue, all of a sudden, I felt like it was beckoning me for a second. But when I looked back, its eyes were pointed in the direction of the mountains.
I faintly remember my mythology teacher, Mrs. Heinblgam, asked a question, and asked the students what the answer was.
In my head, I felt like it had spoken to me. The voice was saying, “The dead are rising, my child, be careful in these times of change. When the era is right, I shall claim you as my own!”
I had heard the sound of that voice stuck in my head, when I was in Mythology class spacing out about it. “The time has come to claim you. At sunset if you can find my statue.”
Well, I thought, I must admit that what I heard in my head was just a voice. Could it have been real?
“Now, class,” said Mrs. Heinblgam, but she sounded distant. “What was the … that has three heads … protects the … Hades.”
I was so lost in my thoughts, that I didn't realize my Mythology teacher, Mrs. Heinblgam was standing right next to me!
“Hello,” she said, waving her hand in front of my face. “Earth to Nakawan! Are you there?”
“Hm,” I asked, still unable to comprehend what I had just heard. “Could you repeat the question, Mrs. Heinblgam?”
Everyone in the class just laughed at me.
“What is the name of the mythological dog that has three heads, Nakawan?”
The answer came to me in a flash.
“Well,” the teacher asked. “What is it then?”
“The three-headed dog is named Cerberus,” I answered as plainly as I could to Mrs. Heinblgam.
“Good,” she said. “Class, this is why you don’t get stuck in your thoughts in the middle of class.”
Then the bell rang, thank goodness!
