Shoreham FC Women 1-2 Horsham FC Women

With first and second place in the league secured, Shoreham and Horsham were battling for third and a possible promotion place. Horsham came out on top of the game which most people thought was going to be a close encounter. Written by Women’s Media Officer, Kevin Gargini.

The Hornets penultimate SCWGFL Premier Division game of the season was switched to the Camping World Community Stadium due to an unplayable pitch in Shoreham. On the 4G surface the game should have seen crisp and accurate play but unfortunately that was not the case.

The first half was very timid from both teams and neither could find their footing in the game. The attempts on goal were limited but Horsham hit the woodwork midway through the first half. It was Shoreham who broke the deadlock with a shot that beat Horsham keeper, Lucy Apps, to make it one nil to the visitors.

As both teams came off for half time, neither of the management teams looked particularly happy with what they saw, and Horsham manager Steve McGrane had some reorganising to do.

The second half was much better after some substitutions were made on a lovely sunny Spring Day. There was a lot more cohesion from the Hornets and they were creating more opportunities. On the 49th minute, substitute Nicole McKay, got an equaliser after a great pass from Georgia Bowen. The finish from was excellent and just what the game needed. At one all, there was all to play for. A draw would have benefited Horsham more than the blues and Shoreham knew this, so they kept pushing for the winner.

The Hornets keeper, Lucy Apps, had an exceptional game and made a total of fifteen saves, one save was from point blank and her reactions were up to the challenge. With the time ticking away there was still more to come. This time it was from another substitute, Yasmin Williams, who scored a fantastic solo goal on the 89th minute to put Horsham 2-1 up and in a great chance of that third place finish.

The final whistle blew and the ladies were ecstatic. Lucy Apps was awarded player of the match for her excellent performance in goal. Their final league game is against bottom team Whitehawk, but nothing is guaranteed in football.

Manager Steve McGrane had this to say after the game.

“Not at our best today by any stretch but fair play to the team who kept going and got the win in the end. Special mention to Lucy our keeper, who pulled off some great saves to keep us in the game and what an amazing individual goal scored by Yasmin Williams, her first for Horsham and in senior football!”
