At some point I must have fallen asleep, because I awoke to the man who had sold me my ticket shaking me.
“Your plane will be boarding soon.”
“Thanks,” I said, smiling gratefully. I looked around. Relief washed over me when I saw no package or note beside me.
The flight was full of people. I had gotten a middle seat. It wasn’t going to be a long flight but because it was an early flight, the flight attendance delivered breakfast. When she gave me my tray, a package was placed on it. I just stared.
“I was told to give you that,” she said. “Don’t worry, we have scanned it, so it’s not anything dangerous. Just someone who wanted to give you a christmas present,” smiling, and walked away. The two people beside me tried to discreetly look at my package. The note read “three days of ceremony.” I tried eating my breakfast but my eyes kept glancing at the package. I picked it up, just opening a corner so the people around me couldn't see. The little food I had managed to get down threatened to come back up. I closed it and pushed it as far away from myself as I could. The woman to my right stretched out her hand to take the package from my tray. I slapped her hand away.
“It’s private,” I said through gritted teeths.
“So-sorry,” she said, avoiding eye contact. I felt the person on the other side of me stiffen. They hurried off the plane once it landed, pushing other people out of their way. I was still staring at the package, knowing I couldn’t leave it behind.
I was the last one to get off the plane. My legs could barely keep me up right. I knew I couldn’t run from them anymore, I knew they had always known where I was, but what else can I do?
