Forrest awoke from the brightness of the sun as it penetrated his curtainless window. The familiar sound of cooing of the dove at his windowsill made him smile and feel energetic; he knew it was only good news. He leapt from his bed and opened his window to take the tattered letter attached to the dove’s leg.“Thank you, Henry,” he whispered as he gave the dove a treat and patted his head which made him coo even more. He left some bird feed on his desk invitingly. Henry hopped onto the window and peeped his head inside the house as if he was looking for approval from Forrest to enter his room. He nodded, which Henry responded with a coo before hopping to the table and pecking at the feed. Forrest uncurled the letter and started reading it while brushing his teeth. I never thought anyone would read that letter. It was my way of dealing with the depression ever since losing mum. And then one day the same dove returned with your letter. I live in Manchester and I cannot believe how far the dove has flown to reach you.I hope you do well in your leaving exams. I know it must be difficult, I didn’t finish school. I have been out of work for a while but my uncle worked at a factory on Cambridge Street and I will be working there as well.I should thank you for your letter, I’ve read it many times and it makes me feel better every time. If you are ever in Manchester please visit the mill, it would be nice to have a friend because I don’t have many. I hope this reaches you.Margaret. The letter made him blush, he was not used to female attention. He put down the letter, petted Henry again and hinted for him to leave before putting on his school uniform, which consisted of grey pants, a light blue shirt, a navy tie and a navy jumper, and skipped to the kitchen. He opened the kitchen door to which he was greeted with the smell of porridge.“Porridge again?” he asked as he rolled his eyes.“I’m not getting paid until next week, now eat up or you’ll be late,” she replied and pushed a bowl of sickly dry goop in front of him.&nbsp;He looked at his bowl as if it had cursed him and his family. “Mum, I got a reply, the dove came again,” he said with a huge smile.“Well, isn’t that a strange dove? Who is this person?” she said.“It’s a she, her name is Margaret and she said my letter helped her a lot.”“And where did she and the dove come from?” she asked as she blew air futilely at her coffee as an attempt to cool it.“Manchester,” he said.“That’s a brave pigeon, isn’t it?” she said.“It’s a dove and I’ve named him Henry,” he said.“After your big brother?” she said with a raised eyebrow.“Yes, to commemorate him,” he replied.“Well, that’s nice. I hope you won’t name any pigeon after me when I pass away,” she said with a laugh, spilling drops of coffee over her work shirt.“Not funny, mum,” he said as he started to leave the room. “I’m not hungry, I’m just going to go to school now.” He went back to his room to get his schoolbag and as he was about to leave the house his mother closed the front door.“You’re not leaving without your jacket,” she said.“It’s fine! It’s a sunny day out today!” he said, pointing outside. He opened the front door to show her just how warm it was outside, however it elicited no reaction from his mother. He groaned and grabbed the coat from her hand.“I know you’re not, I just don’t want you to catch a cold, it’s quite close to your exams,” she said as she wrinkled her forehead.He sighed again in resignation and stomped to his bike by the front gate while his mother, who was getting teary-eyed, watched as he strolled off with his bike.
