October Challenge - "When the room went dark, she heard her name."

When the room went dark, she heard her name. " Sarah, Sarah," it said.

This piece is inspired by Charlotte Perkins Gilman's famous short story "The Yellow Wallpaper", which is about the mental decline of an anonymous narrator who is confined to a nursery by her physician husband under the guise of "treatment" for her nervous depression. As her imprisonment continues, the narrator shows an increasing obsession with the yellow paper on the wall. She ends up liberating herself only when she pulls the paper off. My story is an imagined sequal to Gilman's work, exploring how the narrator haunts a new version of herself, emphasising the cyclicality of women's treatment in the medical sphere.

There was a mystery at the end of Ruby and Ryan’s garden. They moved into the old house around five years ago. The house was on the edge of a village called Southwater. The garden was a mess; the previous owners had moved to the island of Malta to enjoy their retirement in the sun and the house sat empty for over a year. It doesn’t take long for nature to take over and rule again, it looked like a rainforest.

This is a teaser scene from a book that I'm beginning to write as part of my Archivist series. Currently titled "Redshift" this fourth installment explores an alternative history view of a Soviet style regime over North America. This scene is, currently, only for this contest, though I might include it into the final version of "Redshift" because I do like it's feel. It's presented as a stand-alone piece and it's final inclusion in "Redshift" will not include all of the world building details.
