“Would you want to go to the dance with me,” He asked.

Still in her cheerleading outfit, she started to shiver slightly but was able to conceal it. For now.

“Sure Billy, I mean I have to change first.”

William took the last drag off the cigarette and then flicked the butt away with his ring finger. “Sure. Let me walk you to the locker room.”

They made their way up to the school. A stiff breeze caught her off guard, causing her to shiver outwardly with raised goosebumps all over her arms and legs. Before she knew it, William draped his leather jacket over her shoulders. The soft material warmed her immediately as his body warmth was still in the lining. She poked her arms into the sleeves and hugged her arms around her stomach, as she felt so much better.

“Thank you, Billy,” she breathed as she felt so much better.

William didn’t answer but just nodded as he was looking at his watch.

It was a short walk, and then she looked back at him as she took off his jacket. He reached out, took the jacket, and put it back on. She started to ask what time he would meet her for the dance when he leaned in and kissed her while cupping her chin with his left hand. His touch was absolutely sensual while his lips made her feel absolutely loved, like never before. He pulled back and whispered.

“Be back at eight.”

Jennifer blushed while she tried to come to grips with the feelings she was having. She nodded and watched him walk away after he waved to her.

That was last time she ever saw him. He never returned to school. Ever. No one knew what happened. She never told a soul that he had invited her to the dance, much less that they kissed. She didn’t dance with anyone that night.

That was thirty years ago today. It was the anniversary of the kiss. She had carried this memory around this whole time by herself. Today is the day. She will find out once and for all.

Why?

Jennifer checked the rear-view mirror and stroked a few stray strands of hair from her eyes before shutting off the engine and getting out. She made her way in and found William to be in the corner booth next to the window.
