She kissed him goodbye, knowing he wouldn’t remember her tomorrow. He wouldn’t remember her because he’d be gone, having fought so long to get here, it’d be taken away with one redeeming action. He began to fade on her, their eyes locking for all the moments they had left. He was memorizing her, not that it would matter, but the fact that he was made her choke back a sob. “I’m sorry, Bellamy.”
She went about her life as normal, because any thought of her enemy-to-lover, or whatever he was, made her sick to her stomach. He wasn’t supposed to die. He should have been here, with her, hand in hers, walking the streets of New York City. She walked into the office they both worked at as IT engineers, and was cornered by her best friend before she could even process the empty seat in the cubicle next to hers.
“Hey, oh my god, are you okay? I heard about-“
“Don’t,” she snapped, “please just don’t. I need some space today.” She moved past her friend and sat down in her chair. The Star Wars bobble-head shook at her, almost in a mocking manner. She knocked it over and grumbled, clicking the mouse in an excessively annoying amount of times to get her screen to come to life. What popped up was a project she and Bellamy had been working on, in secret, nothing to do with the actual business. They had figured out a way to bridge their minds, using not only technology but science. Bellamy’s friend Daniel was a top scientist where he worked and though he charged a hefty fee for his services, they were successful. Well, maybe. Almost. They never got to do final testing before… before that happened. So here she was, without her partner she was forced to work with at the start of her career, ignoring the fact that as much as they angered each other, they had slowly began to care for each other through their shared interest in their invention. Her phone rang, and she answered it only to hear Daniel’s voice on the other line.
“I heard about Bellamy… I’m so sorry, Emma.” She didn’t even respond. Didn’t have to. The tears rolled down her cheeks and she fought back a sob, swallowing hard.
“I’m here if you need anything. I’ll run those final tests today, you’re good where you are. But if you’d like to swing by… I’ll be here.” The line died and she placed the phone back on the hook, wiping at her cheeks to compose herself. She wished more than anything right now she could kiss him again. It was the first and last time she had kissed him before he left this world, and now she wondered how many missed opportunities she’d had to do it.
Emma didn’t take up Daniel’s offer, instead walking home from work to her messy apartment. Her poodle. Dirty pots on the stove. Spoiled milk in the fridge. She wasn’t the cleanest person by any means, having spent all her time with Bellamy on that damned project. She looked at the state of her apartment for another minute or so and pushed it all the the back of her mind to go run a shower instead. Her bed was calling her name and the way her home looked was no one else’s business anyway. It’s not like she ever had company over. After a hot shower, she threw on some pajamas and climbed into her cool bed, quickly falling asleep out of pure exhaustion.
“Emma…” She twitched in her sleep, eyes still closed. She must have been dreaming someone calling her name. A light touch came to her cheek and she flinched again, swatting and grunting and she just wanted to sleep peacefully.
“Emma…” the voice called again and she shot up out of the bed, eyes wide. She recognized the voice this time. Looked around the room in search of it, despite knowing it was impossible. She got up and trudged over to the window, noticing it was open and realizing she must have been hearing stuff from the busy streets. The cool breeze pushed at the curtains as she forced the windows shut. Turned around, screamed, fell down against the window seal. Across the room, Bellamy stood awkwardly, as if he was some place he didn’t remember.
“Emma… what am I doing here?” She didn’t respond, still inn pure shock but she moved towards him slowly, in disbelief. She reached out, touched him, felt his warm skin.
“You’re real,” she whispered. “You died… but you’re here.”
“How?” He asked. She remembered back to her conversation with Daniel earlier, cracked a smile.
“Daniel. He ran tests. He must have finished it.” Now Bellamy was smiling too, and they finally embraced, the same desperate embrace they shared right before that memorable kiss.
“You were depressed. You thought I was a figment of your imagination,” Bellamy explained, causing Emma to cock her head a little in confusion.
“Your mind. I could hear it,” he reminded her. “I could also hear the way you wanted to kiss me again,” he said, this time with a smirk. She swatted at his chest, calling him unbelievable but sharing a laugh with him anyway, despite her embarrassment. All that mattered was that he was back. Through everything they had been through, everything she had to go through losing him after finally learning to love him, the thing that brought them together saved him. Bellamy stepped closer, cupping her face in his hands and grazing his thumbs across her rosy cheeks.
“What am I thinking right now?” She asked, voice barely above a whisper. He didn’t have to say a word, just leaned in and pressed their lips together for that kiss she had been internally pleading for.
Daniel never bothered calling, having been there when Bellamy showed up, making sure he knew exactly where he needed to go once he came back topside. But Daniel didn’t have to tell him. He already knew, being that he and Emma were two that are one.
