For Luna Christmas Eve is the best time of the year. She can’t see her family really often, so it is a great opportunity to spend time with them as well. However, little did she know what was about to happen this year when she opened her present she received from her brother at the “Secret Santa”.

At the beginning everything seemed normal. She torn off the wrapper and raveled a medium sized box. She opened it and saw her present. It was a scarf. She thanked her brother, Liam, and wore the scarf but he pointed at the box with his eyes. Luna looked at him in puzzlement and when her eyes met the bottom of the box she saw a letter. “DON’T OPEN IT NOW!” was written upon it, so Luna pretended like nothing happened, so that anybody wouldn’t realize that something was wrong.

Fortunately, the evening passed fast and now Luna is on the way home ready to read the letter her brother gave her. She actually has no idea what she is about to read. After she had a shower she sat on the couch to finally find out. Luna was surprised when she saw that the letter was written from her ex boyfriend, David.

David was he brother’s best friend, but she had no idea that they still keep in touch even though they have broken up two years ago. She barely wants to read this letter after what he did to her. She just wants to forget him and move on. Even though it’s been two years she is still not over him. She just needs to admit it to herself.

My dearest Luna,

I know you didn’t expect a letter from me, especially now, but there are things you have no idea about and I really want to you to know the truth about our past… about us!

When I told you to break up, the reason wasn’t because I slept with someone else. This was the first thing that came on my mind as an excuse when I knew I was forced to do the hardest thing in my life. To break up with you. To lose you forever. I would never cheat on you, I would never hurt you like that. I am not a jerk, I have feelings. Everything would be better if I hadn’t.

A few days before I left you, your dad and I had a conversation. Well, not exactly a conversation… he threatened me. I don’t want to give any further details, I don’t want to remember that night…

The point is that he forced me to break up with you. All because of our parents’ past. You see, your mother and my dad had an affair when they were young. Your father found out the day after I came to your place with my parents. He realized that something was wrong between your mom and my dad. He got furious after she confessed him that and then came to me… Well, you know the rest of the story…

I would never say that to you. I resigned to the fact that I would never see you again. Never. But now I am sitting there, in the hospital… waiting to die. I have cancer. Doctors say that I don’t have much time.

When I first found out, it never crossed my mind to confess you all these, because it would hurt you, but I don’t want you to believe that I actually slept with someone else. You deserve to know the truth. You deserve to know that you were truly loved… and you still are. I didn’t tell you because I knew you wouldn’t want to give up everything, your family, your job, just for me. Would you?

I want to die knowing that you are aware of all this. Now, you know about your father and especially you know about me; about my feelings... I love you Luna!

David

p.s I am at the hospital where my mom works. You know where to find me…

The letter is slipping through Luna’s fingers. She is staring at the ceiling feeling tears running on her cheeks. He has cancer. David has cancer. She has lost two years. These two years she could be with him. She can’t decide who hates the most. Her father or herself?

After a few minutes of sobbing she finally takes the car and goes straight to the hospital to find him. To see him even if she knows it is the last time.

She arrives to the hospital and when she learns in what room he is, she is running impatiently in the corridors. She is opening the door of his room. He is there. He looks really tired, he has lost weight and seems many years older. David realizes she is there and he breathes a sigh of relief  “Luna…”

She doesn’t let him speak. She is burrowing into his embrace like she used to do when she wasn’t okay and all she needed was comfort. She is letting the tears in her eyes fall, soaking his shirt while he is caressing her hair gently.

“I would!” she said after a few minutes of silence.

“What?” David answered confused.

“I would have given up everything for you! Why didn’t you tell me? Why did we lose so much time?” David was wiping her tears until one of them reached her lips. He couldn’t do anything but kiss her.

“Because I couldn’t offer you the life you deserved. You would hurt yourself even more if you’d been though what I am right now. Right now… and the past year!” he breathes heavily “Believe me, I suffer for both of us. You deserve to be happy!”

“And so what? At least I would be with you in your last moments. We would be together. Now what? Now the only thing that I know is that I am losing you… forever!” Luna is now crying even more and David just pulled her closer to him.

“I love you Luna!” he said letting one last tear fall from his eye.

“I love you too David!”

Luna fell asleep into his arms for just a little. When she woke up, David’s soul had already been rested forever!
