Turning around, the sleeping form makes my heart constrict, and I close the door softly and let her sleep for as long as she needs.Back in the kitchen, Bastien’s back, and he turns the volume down when he sees me. There’s a frown on his face as he busies himself making tuna sandwiches with the fresh supplies he’s brought.“So, how was that old witch back at the store? Still alive?” I ask. He stops slicing the eggs and focuses on me. “What? Why are you so silent, son? What's up?”“Are you sure you're going to shack up with Gemma, Dad? I mean, come on. You've had your fun with her, and she's great and all, but she's way too young for you, let’s face it. What will you do when you're pushing fifty a few years from now? Sixty? You’ll be an old fool, and she'll be at her prime.”“What the hell got into you? Did you suddenly grow a conscience and want to save my precious maiden from the big bad wolf? She's free to do as she pleases, you know. I didn't force her into anything.” My voice has lost its usual calm, and I can't believe I'm hearing this from my own son. “I thought you'd be in my corner after all this time.”He picks up the thick slices of multigrain bread and starts spreading mayonnaise on them. “I am in your corner, Dad. I'm just worried, that's all. She's too young and too beautiful. I don't know if you should trust her.”That's it. That’s fucking enough.“Look, son, the fact that a woman like her finds interest in a man like me is a miracle on its own. I'll take my chances and let things play out. I've wasted enough of my life worrying about what other people think.”“I just want you to be happy, Dad. That’s all I’m saying.”I watch as he adds in the tuna, pickles, sliced black olives, and lettuce, pushing the plate my way when he’s finished.I take my first bite of the savory sandwich, pondering his last words. “I am happy, Bastien. I really am.”“Great.”“Good. Now, can you please let me finish this? I think this may just be the best damn sandwich I’ve ever had.”He cracks a smile and looks up to meet my eyes. “The company called. They want me back as soon as possible. I’ll be leaving in a few minutes.”
