The frozen lake cracked beneath his feet. He watched the breaking ice spread around him like a spiderweb. He knew what was coming. The terror of the surface falling away under him, the shock of the cold, the fear of life, and then suddenly the numbness and nonchalance of the sorry waste of flesh and bone that was his body. It had happened to him twice. Once when he was a teenage boy in shallow water. His father and brother had dragged him out of the murky, icy water cursing the freak and dumbass he was. The second time was an accident when he was ice-fishing. Drink induced imbalance made him stumble and fall face first into the hole he had cut for that purpose. Luckily his body was only submerged up to his chest. He managed to pull himself out of his miserable situation without the help of unwanted witnesses.
