She couldn’t remember how she got here. One moment, shadows danced at the edges of her vision, and the next, she found herself standing in the middle of a bleak, unfamiliar room. The air felt heavy, burdened with a musty scent that stirred faint memories she couldn't quite grasp. Her heart raced as she scanned her surroundings. The walls were cracked and peeling, the faded wallpaper revealing patches of bare plaster. A single window, streaked with grime, let in a sliver of pale light that barely illuminated the space. A small wooden table sat in the center, its legs uneven, wobbling beneath the weight of a dusty old book. Instinctively, she took a step forward, only to stumble slightly. A wave of dizziness swept over her, and she grasped the edge of the table for support. Thoughts raced through her mind like lightning—who was she, and why was she here? There was an echo of laughter in her memories but no faces, no names—the images just out of reach, like wisps of smoke. Taking a deep breath, she opened the book. The pages were yellowed and brittle, inscribed with flowing script that seemed both foreign and oddly familiar. Words leaped out at her, invoking a sense of urgency. Then, she froze as she noticed a name scrawled on the title page: Alice Everwood. "Alice…" she whispered to herself. It resonated within her like a forgotten melody. But who was this Alice? Was it her? The soft creak of the floorboards jerked her back to the present. She turned sharply, her pulse quickening. She was not alone. There was someone else in the shadows, watching her, their presence palpable and unsettling. “Who are you?” she called out, her voice steadier than she felt. The figure stepped into the light, revealing a familiar face that sent a chill down her spine. It was a face she recognized, but one she had never expected to see again. “What are you doing here?” he asked, his voice low and tense. “I… I don’t know,” she admitted, searching his eyes for answers. “I don’t remember anything.” “Then we have to get out of here,” he said urgently. “It’s not safe.” Before she could respond, the room began to tremble, the walls vibrating as if they were alive. She felt a pull, an unexplainable force urging her to follow him. As she took his hand, the weight of uncertainty hung heavily between them. Together, they stepped into the unknown, the questions swirling in her mind like a storm. What lay ahead, and would they uncover the truth before it was too late?
