"My name's Maglinski, I don't suppose you remember me." A somewhat overweight gentleman was at Glosnik's front door on a day when Isaac was in the pet shop with Cargo Four. Maglinsky held his pet, Janet, in his hands so that she could frequently rub her cheek against his.
"You're the chap who bought Janet." She recognized the pet instantly, but the owner had no distinguishing features.
"Yes. I was taking Janet for a walk the other day and we bumped into my friend Agron. Our two Earthlings chatted and Janet told me later that Audrey, who she was chatting to, had given birth to a son and Agron had sold the boy. Audrey was broken hearted at losing her son. I told Agron that he shouldn't have done it, but he said it was none of my business. But it is my business. I'm campaigning for more respect to be given to our pets."
"I don't see what I can do about it."
"You brought them all here in the first place. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad you did. Janet, here, stops me from being lonely. She gives me a reason to take her for a walk, otherwise I would just sit at home and put on weight."
"What's the point you are making."
"I want you to try and convince the pet shop to put in a clause in the agreement that they must consult their pets before they do anything drastic like taking a mother's child away from her."
"I don't see what that has got to do with me. Why don't you see them about it."
"I've tried, but they don't listen. All they are interested in is making money."
"But they have to make sure the people taking their pets are providing a good home."
"Yes I know, but they don't go far enough. They won't listen to me, but they may listen to you."
"Look. I have a business to run." Glosnik had already accepted a stud fee from Agron to make Audrey pregnant again with Isaac. She knew Isaac wouldn't mind. She couldn't look Maglinski in the face when she added, "If I start criticizing my customers, they may well take their business elsewhere."
"And get an inferior product. You go to Earth and rescue people. The Earthlings that you bring back become your friends, your responsibility. Janet is so grateful to you for rescuing her. On Earth nobody loved her, but now she loves me and I her. It's the same with you and Isaac, and practically all the pet owners. But if one of your competitors took just anybody from Earth, they might resent being here and not make good pets. You're the best Glosnik. Don't ever forget that."
He had made his point. She began to like him. Gradually they saw more of each other. They fell in love and lived together for the rest of their lives.
Isaac was no longer able to sleep on Glosnik's bed and was given a mattress in the kitchen, which he shared with Janet.
Janet became pregnant but was never separated from her children. Isaac was a proud dad and was also the pet of Glosnik and Maglinski's children.
