With newfound determination, they planned their next move. They decided to confront Mr. Evans and record the conversation as evidence.
The next day, they waited for Mr. Evans outside the school. As he left the building, they approached him.
"Mr. Evans," Alex began, "we need to talk to you about the science lab."
Mr. Evans looked startled but quickly composed himself. "What about it?"
"We know about the Quantum Resonator," Jake said, holding up his phone discreetly to record. "Why do you have it?"
Mr. Evans’ face paled. "You don’t understand. It’s not what you think."
"Then explain," Emily pressed.
He glanced around nervously. "Not here. Meet me in the lab tonight, and I’ll tell you everything."
They agreed, though unease settled over them. That night, they returned to the lab, their nerves on edge. Mr. Evans was already there, the Quantum Resonator on the table.
"I’m part of a secret project," he began, his voice low. "We’re developing new energy sources. But something went wrong. The Resonator is unstable."
"Why didn’t you tell anyone?" Mia asked.
"Because if this gets out, it could cause widespread panic," he explained. "I’ve been trying to fix it, but I need more time."
Just then, the lab door burst open, and a group of men in suits stormed in. "Step away from the device," one of them ordered.
Mr. Evans raised his hands, his expression one of resignation. "I was trying to protect everyone," he said quietly.
The men confiscated the Quantum Resonator and escorted Mr. Evans out. One of them turned to the friends. "Thank you for your cooperation. We’ll take it from here."
As the men left, the Everwood Detectives felt a mix of relief and sadness. They had uncovered the truth but at a great cost.
