In July 1864, during General William T. Sherman's campaign toward Atlanta, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth and her friend, Martha, are among the hostages taken to be sent north. What was their crime? Sewing uniforms for the Confederate army! Four hundred women and children have been rounded up to be sent north, their mills destroyed, and marched north into Union territory to prevent them from aiding the Confederacy. Eliza's sole focus is not exile, but returning home to her ailing mother in Marietta, Georgia.
