Amelia’s pov

After feeding the dogs and taking them for a walk they settled down so I could work on my homework. Which always seems to take way too long or there’s just that much work I have to do. Suddenly, Kamryn’s offer is starting to look better, especially if I can knock out a good chunk of work. When Lydia and I took her car in I wasn’t able to stay as long as I would’ve liked, but they couldn’t get to it until the next day so tomorrow might be my chance to stay longer after Lydia gets her car back. I’m not the type to ditch a best friend for a guy, plus Lydia had her date with Pat. I couldn’t help, but smile at their relationship. Even though to my knowledge neither one of them has asked the other out, but neither one of them is seeing anyone else. They will eventually become official.

“It’s sad that my best friend is in a relationship before me, but to be fair I haven’t really wanted to date anyone. At least until Kamryn. I’m in trouble” I said, laying my head down and let out a sigh I finally got everything finished and went to bed at 3:00am and let me tell you the three and a half hours I got were not enough.

“You look like a zombie” Lydia told me the next morning after I picked her up.

“I know. I only got about three and a half hours of sleep last night after finishing my homework.” I said, turning into the school parking lot and parked.

“Girl, you’re more committed than I am” she said, laughing “I would have given up by midnight” she added as we walked towards the school.

“Like you and Pat don’t stay up past midnight doing I can only imagine” I said, stopping at my locker.

“Okay, you got me there” was all she said and I couldn’t help, but laugh because I refused to cry in front of Lydia when she’s so happy with Pat. We parted ways after stopping at her locked. I hated that we didn’t have any classes together and only saw her at the beginning of the day and at lunch. I just sat down when my phone went off. I pulled it out expecting to put it back because it was something that could wait until I was between classes, but it was from Kamryn and I wanted to answer him.

‘Hey. Your friends car should be done today. Do you think she’ll let you stay and hang out for a bit?’

‘Let me? She’ll be making eyes at me and probably would have made an excuse anyway, but yes I’ll stay :)’

‘Great. I’ll see you later.’

Nothing could wipe the smile off of my face for the rest of the day. I managed to actually pay attention in all of my classes, but in the back of my mind my thoughts drifted to Kamryn. When the final bell rang I practically ran to my locker and then had to force myself to wait for Lydia as her classes are at the other end of the building. I was texting Kamryn when she appeared with a smile on her face.

“Yes?” I asked, looking up at her beaming like she won the lottery

“My car is done” she said, putting her backpack in the jeep.

“Sweet” I said, sending my text off and climbed in. I drove to the shop and tried to park close, but not too close at the same time. While Lydia was taking care of her car I couldn’t help, but stare at Kamryn as he worked. I forced myself to stop when Lydia was done.

“I give you guys a month tops before you guys get together.” she said, looking at me and then Kamryn.

“Thank you for the vote of confidence” I said, laughing at her. As if hearing us Kamryn looked over and waved. I waved back.

“If not sooner” she said, laughing as Kamryn finished what he was doing and walked over to us.

“Hey” he said, stopping in front of us

“Hey, thank you for replacing my battery” Lydia said

“Anytime, but it looked like you might need a new car soon” he said, glancing at me then went back to Lydia.

“I know, but I’m not sure I’m ready to part with her yet.” she said and I had to stop from rolling my eyes.

“That’s not how you felt before we dropped her off” I said, looking at her.

“I said that in frustration” she played it off.

“Okay” I said, laughing and I caught Kamryn looking at me.

“Thank you, again, Kamryn. I’ll see you later, Amelia” she said, waving at us. When we were somewhat alone I asked Kamryn the question that’s been on my mind since he texted me.

“You didn’t move Lydia’s car in front just to see me did you?” I couldn’t help, but ask. I didn’t want him giving me or Lydia special treatment.

“No. I promise we didn’t. We got done with another car sooner than we thought and since she just needed a battery we did hers after” he said, looking at and I could see the truth in his eyes.

“Okay and here I thought you just wanted to see me sooner” I said, laughing a little.

“If I wanted to see you then I would just ask to see you” he said, looking at me and all I could do was stare at him “was that too forward?” he asked, starting to look embarrassed.

“No, not at all. I actually find it very sweet” I said, smiling at him. We walked to his office for a little bit more privacy and this is where I do my homework. “Thank you for letting me invade your space” I said, setting my bag down.

“You’re welcome to invade my space anytime” he said, smiling at me before heading back to work.

A few hours later I got all my homework done and decided to read the book that I’ve been slowly making my way through. I read for a couple more hours before I decided it was time to go home.

“Heading home?” Kamryn asked, walking over to me.

“Yeah. I’ve got three dogs to walk before I go to bed” I said, adjusting my bag.

“Sounds like fun. Let me walk you to your car. It’ll make me feel better” he said as we began the somewhat short walk to my car.

“Thank you. I’m still not over that day I was followed” I said, putting my stuff in the back seat.

“Honestly, I’m not either” he admitted and my feelings for him grew even more in that moment. Other than Lydia, my parents and Pat I’ve never had anyone else care for me the way he seems to.

“Thank you again, Kamryn” I said, reaching up to kiss his cheek “I’ll text you when I get home” I said, getting in the jeep and drove home.

Kamryn’s pov

She kissed me. Holy shit she kissed me. The girl I’ve had a crush on for years kissed me.

“Hey, Kam? You okay? We could use some help” I heard my fellow mechanic and friend Connor call out.

“Yeah. Comin’” I called back watching her jeep disappear down the road.

After work I was over it. I hurt and I was sore as hell, but thankfully tomorrow was Saturday so we were only open until 12:30pm so I can nap and recover and straighten my house a little. I checked my phone and found a couple texts from Amelia.

‘I made it home with no issues’

‘All dogs have been walked, again with no issues’

‘That’s great :)’

‘It is, but can I admit something to you’

‘Anything’

‘I think something is wrong with my dad. He’s got this blank stare that I’ve never seen him have and he comes home later than he has before.’

‘I thought he always worked late?’

‘He did, but then he started being home earlier and more often and one time I thought I caught a whiff of a woman’s perfume’

“Oh, no” I couldn’t, but say it out loud because I knew what that meant.

‘Amelia do you think your dad is having an affair?’ I’m worried for her to answer because I didn’t want to see her family fracture more than it has already.

‘Yes’ I could tell it look her a lot to text that one word and I wanted nothing more than to wrap my arms around her in a hug. I honestly didn’t know what ot say.

‘Amelia, I have no idea what to say. That’s a shitty thing to discover or have an inkling of.’

‘I wish Pat was here’ I could hear the tears in her text. It broke my heart, but I offered the only thing I could.

‘Do you mind if I come over? I’m not Pat, but I’m a good shoulder to cry on.’

It took so long for a response to come I thought she fell asleep.

‘Would you please?’ I’m not sure if it was the please or what, but I texted her that I was on my way and a few minutes later I was meeting her at her front door. I could tell even in the dim light she had been crying.

“Hey” I said, taking in her appearance. She had on one of Pat’s school shirts and shorts with her hair thrown up in a messy bun and it made my heart stop.

“Hi. I’m sorry I look like a mess” she said, letting me in.

“You’re not a mess, Amelia” I said, letting her guide me to her room. We were quiet all the way to her room. I was afraid she would get in trouble for having me over so late.

“Thank you for coming over. I know you still have to work tomorrow still” she said, sitting on her bed. I leaned against her desk.

“You’re welcome, but you don’t ever have to thank me” I said, smiling at her “I do want to ask why you asked me to come over and not Lydia?” I asked, looking at her confused.

“She knows my dad’s been weird, but she’s with Pat and if my dad is having an affair I don’t want it coming from Lydia. It should come from me.” she said, clasping her hands together.

“I can understand that” I said, walking over and sat down next to her.

“I know I should tell him, but a passing whiff isn’t enough evidence nor is him working late.” she said, looking at me.

“I know. I wouldn’t say anything until you have more solid evidence” I said, grasping her hands with mine.

“Thank you” she said, looking at me. We sat in silence for a while before she broke it. “Can you stay a little bit longer?” she asked, quietly, but not looking at me. I just smiled at her and lifted her face up to look at me.

“Sure, darling” I said, getting up so she could pull the covers back. I took my hoodie off and set my phone alarm for an hour earlier than normal so I would have time to get home and changed. She climbed in and I climbed in beside her. I was surprised when she laid her head on my chest and I felt her breathing relax as she fell into a deep sleep. It wasn’t long till I fell asleep too, but then my alarm went off. I turned it off and gently climbed out of Amelia’s bed. I quietly made my way downstairs and made my way home.

Amelia’s pov

Last night was probably the best sleep I’ve gotten in a long time. When I woke up Kamryn was gone, but his hoodie was still on the floor. I smiled to myself because either he forgot it on accident or on purpose. I ditched Pat’s shirt and put on Kamryn’s and I couldn’t help, but send him a picture and a thank you.

‘Thanks for last night and the souvenir’ I wasn’t expecting a text back until later so I was surprised when I got one back almost instantly.

‘You’re welcome. Damn that hoodie looks better on you than it ever did on me’

‘You might not ever get it back then’

‘You can keep it. I’ve got more’ I couldn’t help, but smile at his text. I sent him one last text before somewhat getting ready to do nothing, but lounge around the house.
