“Mr. Adams?” Sasha, my new assistant, gently knocks on my door. “There is a…”
“Thank you.” Harper interrupts her and walks into my office. “Noah, why do you go through so many women assistants? Is she like the third this week?”
I shrug. “They think they can sleep with me. And when they try, and I tell them no, they leave. Most of them don’t even stay long enough for a paycheck. They just know I work here and immediately apply.”
“Oh. Well, you should probably inform them before starting that you have a girlfriend now. I’d hate to be on the receiving end of my punch. It’s not the nicest.”
“I’m aware,” I add. “You punched me last night after calling you a soul sucker, remember.”
She smirks. “I do. My punch to your throat was hilarious.”
“Not for me!” I argue. “It fucking hurt. You could have been nicer about it.”
“Anyways.” She says, quickly changing the subject. “I have to go to Boston tomorrow. I will be back on Thursday.”
“No, you don’t,” I argue, basically commanding her not to go. “For what purpose?”
She lowers her head, narrows her eyes, and scoffs with disgust. “I’m going to Boston for work. You’re not stopping me. The fact that you told me no is fucked up enough. I’m going, Noah. I love you, but I’m not giving up my job for you.”
“Why not?” I ask with a smirk. “I can take care of you. I’ll give you a million dollars to quit your job right now. And you will never have to work again. Even if we broke up, you’d be set for life.”
She chuckles. “It’s twenty-twenty-five. A million doesn’t go that far anymore. Yeah, I’d survive for a while if we split up, but then what? I’m not giving up my job for you.”
I turn my chair from left to right, swaying back and forth. “When do you leave?”
She glances at her watch. “In an hour. Why?”
I flash my eyebrows. “We can fuck in that short of time.”
“Not happening.” She’s quick to interject. “I don’t have time to shower. And I am not fucking at ten in the morning just to go to Boston and be dirty. Not happening.”
“Fine!” I grumble. “I have to wait until Thursday?”
She shrugs like it’s no big deal. “Yep. Sorry, babe. There is not a damn thing I can do about it. I have work.”
I huff. “You better not even consider ‘soloing’ it. I’ll take care of you when you get home. I’m going to go to sleep for the next three days.”
“Oh, stop.” She says and wraps her arms around me, bringing her lips closer to mine. “You’re being a giant baby. Now that you finally have what you want, you better not act like this all the time. It’s slightly cute but also annoying.”
“Sorry,” I say and peck her lips, quickly pulling back. “But now that I finally have what I want, it seems like I’m getting less of it than I was before.”
“You’re not.” She argues and kisses me. Our lips collide, sending a shockwave of arousal straight to my cock, like every other fucking time.
I pull away. “We can’t kiss like that.”
She smiles. “Awe. Does it drive you wild?”
I glance down in between us. Her hand is quick to slide across my pants and grips my cock. “Oh!” She exclaims. “You are very hard. It was one small kiss.”
“That’s all I need from your beautiful face,” I say, trying to back away. “You should go. I’m going to try begging you for sex if you don’t.”
She flashes her eyebrows and leans in. “Fair enough. But I did say I can’t get dirty.”
“What are you getting at?” I ask and lean my forehead against hers.
The sound of my zipper unzipping excites me, but I’m still not sure where she is going with this. “What are you doing?”
She slides her tongue along my lips. “I have a slight sore throat. I need something to coat it. Maybe your come has enough vitamins to make me feel better.”
“You’re not about to give me a blowjob in my office right before you leave.”
“You were trying to get me to fuck you.” She argues. “I don’t want to be dirty and stink like sex. But a blowjob. I can quickly brush my teeth before I leave. You have brand new toothbrushes in your office bathroom. And you have travel toothpaste in your second drawer.”
“And you know that, how?” I ask, raising an eyebrow.
“Because I did work with you when we first met. Remember, I shadowed you.”
“I remember, but…”
“Mr. Adams.” Sasha interrupts us. “The police are here. They are looking to speak with you.”
“So much for the blowjob,” I mumble quietly. I wave my hand. “Send them in.”
“Mr. Adams?” An overly large officer comes in. “May we have a word…” He looks at Harper. “In private.”
I stand up and extend my hand out to shake his. “We may not. She’s my…fiancé. Whatever you have to talk to me about can involve her.”
His worried eyes return to her, and he nods. “Okay!” He inhales a heavy breath. “My name is Officer Bryant. I am with the city police force, and we have an open investigation. Do you know, Megan Collings?”
“I do,” I say and lean against my desk. “What exactly is this about?”
His eyes wave with uncertainty. “Well, normally we’d take you down to the station to discuss this further, but you’re not forced to, and something tells me you wouldn’t go.”
“If you ask nicely,” I say and gesture my hand toward a chair. “Would you like to sit?”
“No, sir.” He says and lowers his hat. “Megan was found dead last night. And the last phone call she made was to you.”
My heart sinks, and for a second the world around me has disappeared. “I’m aware of the phone call,” I say, swallowing the uncertain anxiety inside of me.
I don’t get anxiety. What the fuck.
The officer clears his throat like he’s just as nervous as I am. But everyone in this town knows me or knows of me, and for some unknown reason, even the police in this town have some kind of fear or uncertainty when they are around me.
He glances at Harper and the shocked look still on her face. “Well, may I ask what the call was about?”
I nod. “May I ask how she died?”
“It’s an open investigation. Until we know for certain, we can’t speak about it.”
I exhale and purse my lips together. “We talked about her current relationship. She had found someone and wanted to thank me. We must have spoken for thirty minutes.”
“Hmmm…” Harper interjects and it’s obvious she’s confused and possibly pissed at the fact that I spoke to another girl whom I had shared my office with in a very private way.
I quickly turn my attention to Harper. “Nothing to worry about, babe. I talk to all of my clients. You know how she was with me.”
“Oh!” She flashes her eyebrows in annoyance. “I’m well aware how she was with you.”
The officer clears his throat to interject. “Can either one of you elaborate?”
I nod toward my desk. “Megan Collings had a big crush on me. She tried hard to get me.”
“She did for a moment,” Harper interjects with disgust. “But continue.”
My eyes burn into hers, trying to get her to stop. “Anyway. Megan was determined to date me, but I had refused over and over. For the first time in a long while, she had gotten in contact with me. She had mentioned how she found ‘the one’ and she thanked me over and over. She mentioned how she’d love to meet up for dinner sometime, and even though we both were taken, she was determined to still be friends with me. I was okay with most of this. And…”
“I have to leave,” Harper interjects angrily.
I glance at my watch, knowing she was going to please me prior. “You still have forty-five minutes, baby.”
She chuckles. “That’s not happening. I’ll see you on Thursday.”
“You can wait,” I argue, trying to stop her.
“No!” She argues back. “I can’t wait. I have a flight to catch, and you have explaining to do to the officer since I wasn’t with you last night.”
“Oh, he’s not a suspect.” The officer is quick to say. “We think he might be the answer to who killed her, though.”
“Someone killed her?” I ask, feeling even more nervous.
He nods. “We think it was this mystery guy she was talking to you about. She also mentioned it to her mother and her ex-husband.”
“I’ll help anyway possible,” I say, feeling obligated to help. “She was a good person.”
Harper scoffs, which surprises me. “She was something. Anyway. Don’t do anything stupid, babe. See you Thursday.”
I reach my hand out. “Can I at least have a kiss?”
She laughs and slams my door shut.
“I’m so sorry, officer. “I say and roll my eyes. “It’s that time of the month for her, and she recently lost someone close to her.”
I’m lying, but for some crazy reason, Harper is making herself look guilty of something she didn’t do.
“I’m willing to help any way possible. Whatever you need from me, I can do.”
