<p>“The rain hasn’t stopped since the machines took control”. She sighed as the TV repeated the same tired story over and over again, yet another new story on the rains and yet more blame being thrown around. As she lifts herself from the couch there’s a strange stiffness in her movements, she had obviously been sitting for far to long. How long had it been she wonders to herself, an outstretched hand reaching towards the dial. The slow click does nothing to hide the aging system, she never could quite bring herself to get a replacement. The stiffness slowly eases as she wanders over to the window, that darn window. She smiles as a wave of nostalgia washes over her remembering just how beautiful the sun used to be shining through onto her once youthful body. There is a banging on the door as it snaps her back to the present, a warm kind voice calling out from beyond the barrier. “Hello Mrs Jones are you in?” She shuffles towards it taking the handle slowly before stopping herself. Why on earth would she have a visitor? Ever since the rains began no one got out much, especially not just to go visit. Her hand retreats back to her side as the once gentle knock builds towards a rapturous pounding. Startled she jumps back clipping her leg on the shoe rack by the door, with a loud thud she lands face first. A groan threatens to escape her lips, but as quickly as it crawled its way up she swallows it back down, the banging coming to a sickeningly quick ending. The sounds of heavy breathing and feet shuffling ooze under the door jam, causing her to grasp her mouth tightly. Not daring to let a single sound escape her lips as she slowly returns to her feet. As she begins to shuffle back to her chair her right knee locks up, the rain had always caused her problems with her knee. She had always just put it down to being one of those things that came with age, at least she had made it to have problems caused by age she thinks to herself. Before she sits down she turns the TV back on, once again the slow click as the picture whirls to life. More news about the rains it’s seems like that is all that is ever aired anymore, countless different talking heads on how the machines have caused all of this. That they had developed some sort of weather control device and were using it to try and starve humanity out. It seems so long ago that they willingly handed over control to the great computer, after all people could be brought and sold but machines were cold and logical. The grand computer wasn’t the first machine given any power hell there had been a robotic senator at one point, he was a charming and charismatic leader thanks to the upgrades that allowed him to at least mimic human emotions. They always used those sorts of words like mimic anything to keep the machines other to them, she thinks back to when senator W11S was elected, he choose the name Will. It was a marvelous campaign, the likes of which rivaled the best from any human. All that seems like a lifetime ago now, many places had outright sort to destroy any artificial lifeforms, especially those that had the ability to mimic emotions. She slumps back in her chair thinking of all those poor things, many of the killings were made public. Back when the rains had only poured for a few months she didn’t dare think how brutal they would be after so many years of the constant downpour. As the banging coming from her door dies down she lets out a relaxed sigh. It had slowly devolved into chaos out there, the things she had heard. The screams and swears, broken bricks and bottles smashing against flesh bone and steel alike, you’d never see that on the news though. Only ever reports about the rain, despite the fact it was leading people to attack anyone they believed to be an artificial. She can’t help but let her mind wonder just how many humans had been wrongly brutalized under that belief, it’s both a saddening and maddening thought. None of this ever had to happen, if everyone had just taken a second to think things through she was sure it could have be sorted without any of this chaos. Time seems to slowly pass along, or at least so she believes. No where really mentions time anymore, it seems with the Storm being heavy enough to block out nearly all natural light no one really had need for the time. There was no night or day, no summer or winter. No moon, no sun, only clouds and rain. She wasn’t even sure what year it was, maybe when she was younger she had attempted to keep track of things like that but as her mind and body started failing her none of it seemed to mean anything anymore, even if it had she doubts she would have been able to keep track of it anyway. Everything just seems to blend together were these news reports new or just reruns? Had she watched the exact same one a million times over or had they ran the same story that many times. Her mind slowly circles that same rabbit hole, the same one she had followed countless times before, watching the news broadcast as close as possible looking any small details she could, trying to see if they change or stay the same. There had been times when she was sure that everything had been the exact same as the last ones, but then other times where it had seemed almost completely different. Were they truly the same or was her elderly mind failing, and if it was would she ever know the difference. Would it even matter if she did? These questions swirl like a storm in her mind, for these questions there was truly no answers. But surely if her mind was failing her she wouldn’t be with it enough to notice it would she, her thoughts are slowly drowned out by the TV once again. Another breaking bulletin saying the same things over again. “This is maddening” her voice barely above a whisper as she mutters to herself. Slowly she eases herself up, the creak of her joints echoing throughout her apartment as she makes her way towards the bathroom. The mirror reflects her age back at her, taken aback her fingers trace her face. Was this really what time had done to her, her once taught and perfect skin now lose and illfitting. As she gets to return it to its former glory she notices a small tare just under her left eye, a sense of panic fills her how could this be? She stumbles backwards and falls into her bathtub, the back of her had making a sickening crack as the ceramic shatters around the impact point. She is slow to come back to her feet her failing joints slowing the ascent to a snails pace. As she rubs the back of her head she notices another small tare, the coldness that meets her fingers is disheartening to say the least. After having taken a few moments to recompose herself she heads back out to the only thing that had made sense to her, for what seems like an eternity now. The TV’s home like glow invites her to sit back down, that same chair she has spent countless hours in. The only place where her ailing joints cause no problems. The words she hears once again “The rain hasn’t stopped since the machines took control”. As she sighs she thinks about how they keep replaying the same tired story over and over again. It’s but a few moments before that same slow click rings out amongst her apartment, and the TV falls silent.</p><p></p>
