Years went by, and the shadow of Chernobyl remained. The fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 brought new hopes and dreams. Czechoslovakia started shaking off the shackles of Communist rule on the first day of the so-called “Velvet revolt” on 17 November 1989, and with it, a more open discussion of the Chernobyl disaster emerged. We learned more about the sheer scale of the tragedy and the human cost. The stories of the liquidators, the forgotten heroes who risked everything, came to light.

For me, the legacy of Chernobyl is one of anger and betrayal, but also of resilience. It is a testament to the dangers of unchecked power and the lengths to which a regime will go to maintain its facade! But it is also a story of human courage and the indomitable spirit to seek the truth, even in the face of overwhelming oppression.

In the end, the true horror of Chernobyl was not just the radiation, but the lies and betrayals that poisoned our trust in those who were supposed to protect us. And though the scars of that disaster remain, so too does our determination to never let such a tragedy be hidden again.
