They checked rooms, one after another, discovering nothing but silence, dust-coated furniture, and faint echoes of laughter that seemed to hang in the air like a ghost.

They reached the library—a lavish room lined with towering bookshelves and scattered with leather-bound tomes. In the center of the room stood a fireplace, flames crackling softly. As they scanned the shelves, a sudden noise caught Julian’s attention. A series of books shifted, and he found himself drawn closer.

“Margot!” he called, examining the shelf with care. “Help me with this.” Together, they pried a hefty book from the wall. Rather than dust, a hidden door behind it revealed itself, lightly ajar.

With a surge of excitement, they exchanged glances. “Rebecca?” Julian shouted, hoping for an answer, but only silence settled back.

Margot exchanged a nervous glance with him. “Shall we?”

As he pushed through the door, the two entered a dimly lit passageway, filled with the musty scent of history. They could hear a soft echo of music drifting through the air—jubilant and vibrant.

Julian's heart raced. “Rebecca!” he exclaimed, rushing forward.

She looked up, her expression serene yet mischievous. “Ah, Julian. You found me,” she replied, her voice laced with playful mystery.

“What is this?” His brow furrowed in confusion, and he gestured toward the lavish arrangement before them. “You staged your own disappearance? The ball? The guests?”

She laughed lightly, a melodic sound that echoed in the chamber. “I needed to escape the pressures of it all—the expectations, the polished appearances. This hidden world is mine for tonight, filled with revelry and magic.”

Julian absorbed her words, while incredulity danced on the edges of his mind. “But the guests are worried sick! This is a charade, Rebecca!”

“Ah, but is it really? A masquerade is not only a dance but a celebration of the fantastic.” Rebecca rose from her seat, walking gracefully towards him, her presence an enchanting allure. “I wanted to end the year with something unforgettable. A touch of the extraordinary.”

He studied her, the sparkle in her eyes revealing a wall of confidence. His mind whirled; perhaps he underestimated her cunningness. “But at what cost? What if something worse had happened?”

Rebecca waved her hand dismissively, her mask slipping from her face. “People are drawn to the dramatic. To the extraordinary. Loss breeds urgency, yes? I wanted to gift my guests a story to tell as the years unfold.”
