"Start a journal, and in it, write down every deep, dark secret or thought you have."

"Then what?" I ask curiously as I lean back against the sofa. "What happens after I do that?" At this question, my therapist smiles helpfully as she shrugs. "What's the point of doing so utterly pointless?"

"After you fill the first one, start a second one. You can always burn or keep the first one, either to release yourself of the memories' power over your current day through fire, or to remember where you were... and how far you've come by keeping the journal. Writing in a diary or journal daily helps some people overcome trauma from their past, process emotions, and change their futures." My therapist and best friend Whitney James, or Whit, as I affectionally call her, says while holding out a composition book when I roll my eyes in annoyance. "Don't act four, you're in your thirties now, with two kids, and a husband, lady!"

I bite my lower lip and look at my hands in my lap. The only reason I was avoiding this is because I shared my inner most world with no one, not even my husband. I didn't know if I could even write what I think about without sounding terribly selfish. I slowly accept the journal, looking into the brown eyes of my best friend from diapers with a raised eyebrow. Where will I even begin, and how will I find it in me to continue? I'm not exactly consistent with these things.

"There are no rules to having a journal. You can start where you like in your history or present, skip a few days, weeks, months, doesn't matter when you make an entry, it's YOUR diary." Whit sips her coffee and crosses her legs as she leans back in her chair, her short black bob shifting with her speech while we are sitting in her office during her lunchbreak. "You said you wanted to change, Amber. This is your chance for change. Try the diary. You'll find your answers for your next stage there."
